Eleven Words and Phrases that Brad Likes and/or Has Something to Say About:
- 选择困难症 [ xuǎn zé kùn nán zhèng ] – indecision disorder; unable to decide. 症means disease both formally and informally. The way 磊子哥 uses it is definitely the latter.
- 得了 [ dé le ] - all right!; that's enough! Notice that 磊子哥 says this with a heavy 北京话accent and kind of claims it’s a Beijing thing. Who knows if it actually started there? Maybe, but it is somewhat universally used, too.
- 变形计 [ biàn xíng jì ] – Popular Mango TV/湖南卫视 reality show which had students from cities and the countryside trade places for a week. If you’re REALLY bored, you can search for 《变形计第七季》 阔少酿火灾不知悔改 on v.qq.com （腾讯视频）. I show up at about 27 and 33 minutes. So awkward but it was fun. That kid is awesome, and I’m bummed that the phone number I have for him doesn’t work anymore. I’d love to see how he’s doing. 有没有人认识他呢？哈哈，唉！
- 无所谓先后 [ wú suǒ wèi xiān hòu ] – it’s all good one after the other/sooner or later.This isn’t a set phrase, but I just like how 磊子哥 says it.
- 非物质文化遗产 [fēi wù zhì wén huà yí chǎn] - intangible cultural heritage. Boss-level vocab. Fun to say.
- 猛得一想 [ měng de yī xiǎng ] - have something suddenly come to mind.
- 北京范儿 [ Běi jīng fàn er ] – Beijing style. 范儿 is one of my favorite 儿化音s (don’t pronounce the ‘n’).
- 真本事 [ zhēn běnshì ] – true ability. 本事 also means original story/source material. 真本事 is like the real deal. Legit. What the bee’s knees has.
- 的哥 [ dí ɡē ] – cabby. Another one of these terms that Beijingers claim as their own. 磊子哥 mentioned to me that all these new phrases like 快递小哥 and whatnot all owe their existence to Beijingers first saying 的哥.
- 洞察力 [ dòng chá lì ] – insight. More boss-level vocab. 洞察 means to see clearly.
- 混蹦乱跳 [ hùn bèng luàn tiào ] – jump around. Another hilarious thing to hear 磊子哥say which isn’t an actual proverb or anything.
Four 字 Stuff
- 零零总总 [ líng líng zǒng zǒng ] – total zero
- 七老八十 [ qī lǎo bā shí ] - in one's seventies. 七八十岁，指年纪很老：别看他～的，身体硬朗着呢。
- 毫不犹豫 [ háo bù yóu yù ] - without the slightest hesitation. 毫：一点儿；犹豫：迟疑，拿不定主意。
- 一片空白 [ yī piàn kòng bái ] – totally blank space.
- 无欲无求 [ wú yù wú qiú ] - No desire, no demand. 无欲，不对任何事、物抱很大的希望，甚至不抱希望，走到哪儿算到哪儿，不被环境所左右。
- 老泪横流 [ lǎo lèi héng liú ] - be in tears. 老人泪流满面，形容极度悲伤或激动。
- 头脑风暴 [tóu nǎo fēng bào] - brainstorm
- 性情中人 [ xìng qíng zhōng rén ] - A man of nature; full of emotion. 感情丰富，率性而为的人。常常用来形容一个人随其本性、情感外露、率性而为。也有爽快大方的意思在里面。
- 历朝历代 [ lì cháo lì dài ] - successive dynasties; past dynasties; successive reigns of a dynasty
- 阴差阳错/阴错阳差 [ yīn chā yáng cuò/ yīn cuò yáng chā ] - an accident arising from many causes (idiom); a freak combination of factors. 比喻由于偶然因素而造成了差错。也说阴差阳错。
- 命中注定 [ mìng zhōng zhù dìng ] - decreed by fate (idiom); destined; fated. 迷信的人认为人的一切遭遇都是命运预先决定的，人力无法挽回。
