故事背景

专辑的开头，Miles对制作人Bob说: “I’ll play and tell you what it is later.” 这句话的口气太 Miles了！整张专辑有好几处在曲子开始，或者结束的时候，把Miles说的话也录进去了，让专辑的气氛非常生动，自然，有身临其境之感。

说起Relaxin’ 跟另外3张同一系列的专辑，首先要回到1949年。那一年，制作人Bob Weinstock 刚刚成立Prestige厂牌，Bob 也才21岁。1951 年，Prestige 就签下了Miles Davis， 这份合同要到1956年才终止。

随着Miles 在1955年夏天的Newport Jazz Festival上大放异彩，Columbia唱片对Miles展开了强大的攻势。为了尽快结束与Prestige的合约，Miles Davis 说服Columbia跟Prestige展开谈判。双方商定Miles可以为哥伦比亚录音，但是所录唱片在Miles完成Prestige合约里的录音任务前不得发布。

于是，Miles带着自己的小伙伴们在录音室里奋战了两天（5月11，10月26，1956）。这两天的录音被编辑成了4张专辑 （太高产了） –

• Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet 发行于1957年7月
• Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet 发行于1958年3月
• Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet 发行于1960年1月
• Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet 发行于1961年夏天

这又是爵士史上一次 “赶工赶出了传世经典“ 的著名案例。这4张唱片的水准代表了当时爵士hard bop时代的顶峰。
