when something is over or there was chance / a window for something to happen and it's gone .
it's not available anymore.
eg, i thought they would be a great couple, but the ship has sailed, he has a new girl friend .
i was hoping to get the job, but i call and unfortunately the ship has sailed, they already chose someone.
it shouldn't be profound, it could be missing something small.
eg, shall we go to the movie ?
oh that ship has sailed, the last show has began ten mins ago.
2. it's too late
eg, oh no i wanna to sign up but it's too late now, they are sold out .
3. miss the boat ( bigger things have missed)
eg, i really miss the boat on that...
i can't wait to get there.
ok help me get to the next lane 车道
oh Michael that ship has been sailed, you just miss that exit.

well it's too late now, we have to get off the highway.
