There are many study opportunities and professions related to biomedical engineering within the field of public health. Today, we are fortunate to interview the mother of a biomedical engineering student at Oxford University to gain a parent's perspective on how she carefully planned and nurtured her daughter's growth into a top student in biomedical engineering.
Steven:
I am very honored to participate in this interview. My daughter did not have a clear interest in her future during her first year of high school. At that time, she was somewhat interested in math and science but was unsure about what major to pursue. She has strong hands-on abilities, so we sought advice from a professional consulting agency. During her first year, she considered pursuing engineering. Later, in her second year, she became interested when a classmate had an appendectomy. We went to the hospital to learn about the robotic technology involved, which made her realize that biomedical engineering was related to her future interests.
In her second year, she participated in a programming summer camp, learning to solve circuit engineering problems through programming, which sparked her interest in engineering. She also engaged in a research project with an Imperial College professor and learned about advanced technologies such as the Da Vinci surgical robot. She delved into the workings of orthokeratology lenses and discussed improvements with a professor. These experiences led her to decide to further explore the field of biomedical engineering.
Steven:
She believes that biomedical engineering has significant applications in patient diagnosis, treatment, prediction, and prevention. The field of health in the future will be very important for humanity, and she hopes to make a contribution, which is very appealing to her.
Steven:
Currently, she has not yet determined a specific research direction, as she is still studying foundational courses at Oxford. She will refine her specialization in her third year and decide based on her interests and exploration during her studies.
Steven:
In terms of public health, she really loves sports! At school, she joined the squash club and is enthusiastic about participating in various sports activities. She believes that sports are beneficial not only for physical and mental health but also for developing teamwork and leadership skills. Additionally, she is involved in the student union, which is a purely non-profit platform. On this platform, she has participated in several health-related projects, such as organizing health seminars and promoting healthy lifestyles. These experiences have further fueled her interest in public health.
Steven:
Graduates who do not pursue research typically join major companies like General Electric or Siemens in roles such as marketing. Those who choose research may work in academia or industry, focusing on innovation and development within the biomedical engineering field. Essentially, there are two main paths: joining large companies or continuing with research.
Steven:
She explored her major in a very grounded way. Her choice of field was based on her own exploration and the guidance from a planning agency. We, as parents, did not impose our own preferences on her. Instead, we provided her with enough freedom and space to explore her interests genuinely and relaxedly, which I believe is very important.
