Layla Chen is an English content creator and solopreneur.  She was formerly a trained actor in theatre and film in the UK. Currently, she provides online training and coaching in English pronunciation, voice and public speaking to native Chinese around the world.  She graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama at the University of London with a masters in screen acting.  She was also selected to be a leading international figure in the Forbes Global Alliance in 2024.  Today we talk about the role of language in our lives.  From language learning, miscommunication, cultural differences, dating and marriage.  Layla shares her experiences moving to the UK despite not speaking English, the challenges of fitting in to a new culture and the impact it had when she returned to China.  We talk about communication styles and high-context vs low-context societies.  The conversation touches on the pressures of marriage in modern Chinese society, the evolving dynamics of relationships and expectations for gender roles.  We also talk about dating in the West vs China, the influence of social media on dating culture and how to know when you’ve met “the right person”.

1:41:51 I’m so related to this part. Even my parents love each other and they seem to have a happy marriage, I still felt that my mom lost so much in her life. I guess this is a lot to do with the gender culture. For example my mom always felt that she needs to take care of everyone, not only physically but also emotionally. This kind of deprivation left her no time to take care of herself or find out what she wants whereas my father could behave like a kid in the house.

Almost done listening this long episode and I like it very much!
2:05:38 The Present Situation of Chinese Society (Love)

1/ Marriage between a man and a woman is more like doing business, and its nature is more like an exchange of commercial interests than whether they love each other (due to the moral kidnapping and interference of parents and aunts and uncles, as well as the weakness of both men and women - not daring to fight against these interferences).

2/ Young people in China are reluctant to get married and have children because they don't want to live a life as stifled as their parents did;

Secondly, most of the time, young people's love affairs are fast food and one-night stands.
