Have you ever experienced this? When you're feeling depressed, you might find it difficult to engage in creative activities or even think clearly. In this episode, I want to share something important with you: what I just described is actually a common phenomenon. Research shows that depression, anxiety, burnout, and high job stress can impact creativity. So, what’s the reason behind this? Both anxiety and depression can lead to cognitive rigidity, making employees less likely to explore new ideas or take creative risks. Simply put, when you're feeling anxious or depressed, your mind becomes blocked, making it difficult to think flexibly and generate new ideas (Murphy et al., 2006). For example, I personally felt depressed when I was isolated in the workplace. Instead of focusing on creative tasks, I kept overthinking: What’s wrong? Why am I being isolated? This not only affected my ability to be creative but also made it hard to handle even regular work tasks. Employees experiencing high levels of job stress often show a decline in problem-solving skills and lower engagement in creative work (Asad & Khan, 2003). Let me give you a simple example: when my workload is overwhelming, and a deadline is approaching, I have no time or mental space to think about creative ideas. All I care about is finishing the task on time with acceptable quality. A study on physicians found that burnout negatively affects creativity. People experiencing burnout tend to withdraw socially and engage less in creative activities (Şahin, 2023). Think about it—when your body and mind are completely drained, how can you possibly have the energy to socialize or brainstorm new ideas? Personally, when I feel burnt out, all I want to do is collapse on the couch and do nothing—or just get some deep sleep. In short, don’t let depression, anxiety, high job stress, or burnout take over your life—they can kill your creativity. Take care of yourself in the workplace. Your mental well-being matters, and protecting it can help you stay creative and productive.
