3👋 Hi，大家好，我是乌兰托雅 (Tuoya Wulan)，朋友们都叫我托雅。我是一名英文系的学生，也是一名译者和插画师。2025年春，W. J. T. 米切尔（W. J. T. Mitchell）教授来北大做一系列题为 “艺术与无限” 的讲座，我请他在未名湖边分享了一下自己的人生经历。在这期即兴发挥的英文播客中，我们两人主要讨论了米爷爷的回忆录 Mental Traveler: A Father, a Son, and a Journey through Schizophrenia（The University of Chicago Press, 2020）。目前我正在翻译这本书，预计2026年左右由新行思推出。Mental Traveler 讲述了米爷爷的儿子加布里埃尔 · 米切尔（Gabriel Mitchell）经历精神分裂症（schizophrenia）并用艺术创作的方式理解自身的故事。加布离世后，米爷爷撰写了这本书，希望通过写作理解儿子的生命和自己的经历。在书籍内容外，我们还讨论了米爷爷在美国学习、研究、教授英语文学和艺术史的感悟。
由于精力有限，在这期播客推出时，我还没有来得及翻译一份中文文稿供更多听众和读者参考，只能暂时以全英文的方式呈现，未来有机会的话，我希望能专门用一段时间慢慢整理好，以文字形式将这次对谈呈现给更多感兴趣的朋友。
这档播客缘起于这本书，所以就叫Mental Travelers 好了。初衷是和大家分享米切尔老师的人生经历，目前没有定期更新的安排。也许在遇到下一位知心的同路旅人时，我会随机更新，还请大家不要期待。

W. J. T. 米切尔 (W. J. T. Mitchell) ：
美国芝加哥大学英语和艺术史双系同聘荣誉教授（Gaylord Donnelley Distinguished Service Professor），享誉国际的艺术史、视觉艺术与文学理论专家。他于1988年至1991年间担任芝加哥大学英语系主任，并自1978年至2020年长期担任权威期刊《批评探索》（Critical Inquiry）的主编，因其在教学与科研领域的突出贡献，米切尔教授获得美国艺术史教学终身成就奖，并于2017年获选美国人文与科学学院院士。他的代表性著作包括《图像学》（Iconology, 1986）、《图像理论》（Picture Theory,1994）和《图像何求》（What Do Pictures Want?, 2005）等。米切尔教授是视觉文化研究领域的开创性学者，他的跨学科研究广泛影响了美学、媒体研究、文学批评、艺术史和视觉文化研究等多个领域，使图像与视觉成为当代人文学科的重要方向。他的在人文学科广泛引领了的图像理论和视觉文化的研究，他提出了“图像转向”（pictorial turn）、“元图像”（meta-picture）等概念，探索图像、语言与权力的关系，深刻影响了文学、艺术史、艺术理论和文化研究等领域。他通过《图像理论》等著作重新定义了图像研究方法，将视觉文化与社会政治语境紧密联系起来。

How does a parent make sense of a child’s severe mental illness? How does a father meet the daily challenges of caring for his gifted but delusional son, while seeking to overcome the stigma of madness and the limits of psychiatry? W. J. T. Mitchell’s memoir tells the story—at once representative and unique—of one family’s encounter with mental illness and bears witness to the life of the talented young man who was his son. Gabriel Mitchell was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age twenty-one and died by suicide eighteen years later. He left behind a remarkable archive of creative work and a father determined to honor his son’s attempts to conquer his own illness. Before his death, Gabe had been working on a film that would show madness from inside and out, as media stereotype and spectacle, symptom and stigma, malady and minority status, disability and gateway to insight. He was convinced that madness is an extreme form of subjective experience that we all endure at some point in our lives, whether in moments of ecstasy or melancholy, or in the enduring trauma of a broken heart. Gabe’s declared ambition was to transform schizophrenia from a death sentence to a learning experience, and madness from a curse to a critical perspective.
