Lily Lam is a content creator and designer based in New York City.  She creates content that speaks to underrepresented voices and is an influencer within the world of Magic: The Gathering.  Today, we talk about gentrification in New York’s Chinatown, cultural identity as Chinese-Americans, and the recent rise of Chinese soft power.  Lily shares her thoughts on deep systemic problems in America and we discuss how American perceptions of China are shaped and how they’re now changing.  We talk about Lily’s personal journey with change and transitioning, its impact on her family, and finding inner peace in a new, yet familiar identity.  We also talk about fashion and how it can be a useful tool in building personal confidence through individual style instead of chasing trends.  This is a heartfelt discussion on identity, acceptance, and change.

Lily, I want to thank you for sharing your story — I think you are very brave, and I truly admire your courage!

However, after listening to your episode (I heard it about two weeks ago but have been too busy to respond until now), I’d like to share a few thoughts:

1⃣ You mentioned how much you love Chinese tradition and culture — as do I. But have you considered which place has done the most damage to that tradition? Unfortunately, it is the very place you visited during the show.

2⃣ As a transgender person, I believe individualism must be very important to you — choosing your own path regardless of birth gender or how others see you. But do you know where individual rights and respect for individualism are the weakest? Again, the place you visited. It may have seemed like nobody showed bias during your visit, but that’s likely because you were a visitor, spending money, and no one knew you personally.

3⃣ I agree that there are some troubling policies in the U.S. right now — for example, restrictions on transgender participation in sports. But even so, transgender rights in the U.S. are still far ahead of what exists in the place you visited. There, public discussion of transgender rights is not even allowed in the media — at all.

Thanks again for your bravery and for sparking these reflections.
Chloner:Well, if we can't talk about trans stuff in public in China, then where are you listening to this podcast, the place you wouldn't name?
Hope-H:Well said.
