In this episode of No Velocity, I sit down with the renowned Turkish actor and director, Mehmet Ali Nuroğlu to talk about his new solo stage play Dünyada—a poetic little monologue play with connotation, that premiered in Istanbul in June 2025.

Built without a timeline, Dünyada is a constellation of fragmented moments, told through a single voice—“the man”—who speaks to us in shifting images, lights, sounds,  and silences. It is a theatre piece that is as much about rhythm as it is about story, crafted through a deeply collaborative team and centered on the fierce loyalty to the written word.

Mehmet and I spoke about the making of this piece, the inspirations behind its live sound-mixing integration, the use of real-time images, and the process of training himself to control every technical cue on stage—all while remaining emotionally present as a performer.

We also touched on the haunting beauty of its theme music, Başkası by Çağrı Sinci, a track that resonates with the play’s core feelings of alienation, otherness, and yearning. This music, created before Mehmet and Çağrı ever met, found its way into the heart of Dünyada almost by fate—an artistic encounter that speaks to something beyond language.

Through this late-night, open-hearted conversation, I came to see not only Mehmet’s remarkable skill and presence as an actor, but also his courage, clarity, and warmth as a person. And I hope that through this episode, you might glimpse the same.

Dünyada will return to the Istanbul stage from October 1–10, 2025.
If you happen to be in the city, don’t miss the chance to experience it in person—perhaps it will speak to something in you, too.
