sometimes people might ask for a donation. so in lieu of gifts .please consider making a donation too. this does happen a lot .especially when there's a death. because no one's really giving any they might say flowers. that's what we say. if the person passed away from an illness they might research that illness or whatever it may be in lieu of（代替） gifts.

🌈American culture(How do you know you should bring a gift or not)
presence and presents are "homophones"
"presence" (means we want you to be at the party, physical presence)
"presents"(gifts)
Whether bringing a gift depends on the relationship with your friends.
🧐If you are worried about and embarrassing other people, you think other people are not bringing a gift, you could always send a virtual card or something.(Only that person knows.)
🧐someone's pass-away,没听出来，找半天也没figured out.
🧐someone say they don't need something,but you may consider bring it anyway.
Role Play
A: So what can I bring?
B: just yourself!
A: No, really!
B: Seriously!
A: Ok, sure.
B: Just presence, not your presence.
👏👏👏You can't go wrong with bringing little something, and they could be subtle and small.
