The real progress is made of the mixture of idealism and realism. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The Real Progress Stems from the Blend of Idealism and Realism

There is a long-standing debate over the driving forces behind human progress. From my perspective, real and sustainable progress cannot be achieved by relying solely on idealism or realism; instead, it is the harmonious integration of these two that paves the way for meaningful advancements.

Idealism serves as the compass that points out the direction of progress. It is the unwavering belief in a better future that inspires people to go beyond the status quo. For instance, the ideal of "equality for all" has motivated generations of activists to fight against racial discrimination and gender inequality. Without such lofty ideals, society would remain stagnant, as no one would dare to imagine a world different from the current one. Idealism injects passion and purpose into human endeavors, pushing individuals and communities to reach for heights that seem impossible at first glance.

On the other hand, realism provides the solid foundation upon which progress is built. It is the practical mindset that assesses the current situation objectively and formulates feasible plans. Take the field of science and technology as an example. When scientists aim to develop a new drug, they cannot just rely on the ideal of curing a disease; they must conduct rigorous experiments, analyze data realistically, and address various technical challenges step by step. Realism ensures that idealistic goals are not just empty dreams but can be turned into tangible realities through careful planning and hard work.

The most remarkable progress in history has always been the result of the combination of idealism and realism. The founding of modern democratic countries is a case in point. The idealists envisioned a society where people could enjoy freedom and democracy, while the realists designed the specific political systems, such as the separation of powers, to ensure that these ideals could be maintained in practice. If there were only idealism without realism, the beautiful vision would eventually collapse due to a lack of practical support. Conversely, without idealism, realism would become short-sighted, focusing only on immediate interests and ignoring long-term development.

In conclusion, idealism and realism are not mutually exclusive; they complement each other in driving real progress. Idealism gives us the direction and motivation, while realism provides the methods and foundations. Only by combining these two can we achieve lasting and meaningful progress in all aspects of society.
