Episode Info
Green Frog is Brooklyn-based author Gina Chung’s second book, a short story collection that explores Korean American womanhood, bodies, animals, and transformation as a means of survival. The book is acclaimed to be ‘a fantastic medley of short stories that dance between literary fiction, fable, Korean folklore, and science fiction.’ (NPR)
It has long-listed for the 2024 New American Voices Award, and has awarded A Best Book of 2024 by NPR, An APALA Adult Fiction Honor Book, A Best Short Story Collection of 2024 by Electric Literature, and some more.
In this episode, Chung joins host Jenny Wang to unpack the making of the book. Their conversation wanders through the kaleidoscopic landscapes of Chung’s storytelling, tracing the origins of her surreal imaginaries, the layered process of world-building, and the porous borders between language, myth, and identity. Together, they explore what it means to write across cultures and genres, and how imagination becomes a lifeline—especially for a bilingual writer shaping new worlds in between languages.
