米歇尔：我也完全不懂。真的，这不是我的兴趣所在。不过很多人确实对汽车特别热衷。

米歇尔：有意思的是，即便你对车没兴趣也能借此沟通。比如昨晚我搭朋友的车——那是辆宝马或奔驰之类的豪华车，不过是家人传给他的。他讲了个趣事：等红灯时总有人（通常是中年男性）摇下车窗想和他聊车，指着车各种点评，让他尴尬得只能目视前方。我们就这样因“都不懂车”产生了共鸣。
林赛：确实有趣。那么第一个问题可以是：“你开什么车？”注意别显得像在炫耀自己的车。顺便说个趣事：我先生丹和我爸的车一模一样，连颜色都相同。
米歇尔：天哪，我还没见过一家人这样的。
林赛：是吧？当初在城里我们只用一辆车，我爸买了那款，丹觉得不错就选了同款同色——是蓝色的。后来搬到郊区，父母把他们的车送给了我们，于是我们又多了辆同款蓝色轿车。
米歇尔：真有意思。不过兄弟姐妹之间开同款车的情况我倒见过。

Lindsey: Yeah. All right, let's go through some questions you can ask. The first one is: "What kind of car do you have?" Just asking about the type—and be careful not to sound like you're bragging about your own car. Fun fact: Dan and I actually have the same car as my dad, in the same color.
Michelle: Oh my gosh, I've never seen that in a family before.
Lindsey: Interesting, right? So my dad—when we lived in the city, we only used one car. I didn't have a car. He bought his car, and he got the same model and color as my dad because he said it was good and we liked that color. It's blue. And then when we moved to the suburbs, my parents were kind enough to gift us their car, so we ended up with another blue one of the same kind.
Michelle: That's pretty funny. I've never seen that—well, except maybe between siblings in a family.

Lindsey: Yeah, this question comes from "UZO Bazor 2500," who asked: "Hi, your podcast is very good. I'm learning a lot of expressions from it. Could you please make podcasts about cars or stuff like that?" Oh, by the way, that reminds me, Michelle—we need to have an episode on the expression "and stuff like that."
Michelle: Yes, that is... that'll be another day. Absolutely.
Lindsey: So this is a great question. I mean, cars are such a broad topic, but there's so much to talk about. We can't cover it all in one episode—we could do more than this series, but we're going to make a start here. There's so much to say. So today, for Part 1, what we're going to do is share how to connect with people over cars, because it's a huge connection topic. So again, everyone, hit follow so you don't miss any of the series—here and on Business English. And yes, stay tuned for the rest. Right now, we're going to go through some questions you can ask people to get them talking about cars or driving.
Michelle: Yeah. And it's interesting to note: you can also connect with people over your lack of interest in cars. Just last night, I was in someone's car—we went for dinner and got a ride home from a friend. She has a nice luxury car, like a BMW or Mercedes, but it was a hand-me-down from a family member. And she told us this story about how it's crazy that she sees lots of people—usually middle-aged men—gesturing to her to talk about her car. Like at traffic lights, they'll roll down the window and try to talk to her, pointing out aspects of her car. And she gets mortified and just tries to face forward. It was a funny story, and we connected over the fact that we don't care about cars or know much about them. So that's funny too.

Lindsey: Yeah, surprising. I actually thought thrillers were kind of a niche genre. I didn't think as many people liked thrillers as they do. So the results were: 28% said comedy, 37% said thriller, and only 34% said rom-com. I thought comedy would be first.
Michelle: Same. I was really surprised. I didn't think thriller would be the winner here. But I'm definitely a comedy person. What about you? Which one are you?
Lindsey: I like thrillers.
Michelle: Oh my gosh, I like them all. Rom-coms? I love rom-coms. I love the old rom-coms from the 2000s. I just love them. I'm such a softy for those.
Lindsey: Yeah, easy comfort and nostalgia for sure.
Michelle: Exactly. So it's really fun to learn about all of you. And today's question, which kicks off this series, comes from YouTube. Michelle: We are, Lindsey. Do you know a lot about cars?
Lindsey: Cars? No, I don't know anything about cars. What about you, Michelle?
Michelle: Oh, I don't know anything either. Yeah, nope. Not my thing, not my interest. But many people really, really have this love for cars.
Lindsey: I really do think it's a huge interest for a lot of people. So I'm excited. We're actually starting a whole series today—this is Part 1, and I'm really looking forward to it. We'll have Part 1 here, Part 2 on our other show, the Business English Podcast (go over there and hit follow so you don't miss that episode), and then Part 3 back on All Ears English. So get excited, everyone!
This whole series was inspired by a listener question, and we'll get back to that in just a second. But first, we wanted to share some Spotify poll results, right, Lindsey?

So, what kind of show or movie would you rather watch? The options were: comedy, thriller, or rom-com. And I was surprised by the results.
