这一篇我为你挑选了欧·亨利 (O. Henry) 的代表作——《麦琪的礼物》(The Gift of the Magi)。
The Gift of the Magi
Part 1: The StruggleOne dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Tomorrow was Christmas, and Della had no money to buy her husband, Jim, a worthy gift. She sat on the shabby little sofa and cried.
There were two possessions in which Jim and Della took great pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair. It was long, brown, and fell like a cascade of brown waters.
Part 2: The SacrificeSuddenly, Della stood up and went to the mirror. She put on her old brown jacket and hat. She ran to a shop called Mme. Sofronie. Hair Goods."Will you buy my hair?" asked Della."I buy hair," said Madame. "Take your hat off and let’s see."Twenty dollars was the price. For the next two hours, Della searched the stores for Jim’s present. She found it at last: a platinum watch chain, simple but elegant. It was worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it, she knew it must be for Jim. She paid twenty-one dollars for it.
Part 3: The IronyWhen Jim arrived home, he stopped as if he had seen a ghost. His eyes were fixed upon Della, who had cut her hair short to sell it."Jim, darling," she cried, "don't look at me that way. I sold it to buy you a Christmas gift!"Jim slowly took a package from his coat pocket and threw it upon the table. Della tore at the string. Inside were The Combs—the set of beautiful ornaments she had long worshipped in a shop window. They were expensive, and now her hair was gone.
Then Della held out her gift for him—the beautiful new watch chain. "Give me your watch, Jim. I want to see how it looks on it."Instead of obeying, Jim sat down and smiled. "Della," said he, "let’s put our Christmas gifts away. They are too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs."
The Magi were wise men who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as these two are the wisest.

(Symmetry):
If Della had not sold her hair, she would not have been able to buy the platinum chain.(如果德拉没有卖掉头发,她就无法买到那条白金表链。)If Jim had not sold his watch, he could not have bought the expensive combs.(如果吉姆没有卖掉金表,他就买不起那套昂贵的发梳。)
(Classic Challenge)
- 词汇积累: 记住 worth 的三个用法:be worth sth., be worthy of sth. (如文中 worthy of the watch), It is worthwhile to do sth.。
To buy each other Christmas gifts, a poor couple sold their most prized possessions, only to find...
(The Context)
- The Magi:
- Babe in the manger:
(The Deeper Meaning)
故事最后说 “Of all who give and receive gifts, such as these two are the wisest.”(在所有赠送和收受礼物的人当中,像他们两个这样的人才是最智慧的。)
