1. In the context of the Indian caste system, is there currently any bias in favor of higher castes at the legal, social, or civil service examination (public sector recruitment) levels?
Not so much as in the 60s and 70s. There is no favor of higher caste in legal or civil service but there is a stigma to an extent in the society but definitely not in the law or civil service. In fact there are quotas for lower caste people to get into some civil service jobs. But the descrimiarion in the north is high in terms of upper caste, lower caste compared to south but definitely not in law or civil service.
2. In contemporary India, does a sense of superiority among higher castes still exist?
Overall yes , it’s still a problem even among educated people. People deny it but it still exists. But the gems are not worried about it too much but for millennials and older generation some of them still feel a sense of superiority when they belong to a higher caste.
3. Around what time did legal bias or preferential treatment toward higher castes begin to improve or decline?
Legal bias is different from societal bias. In terms of legal , things changed in early 50s and late 50s but as far as society , It began to improve in the late 60s and 70s in Tamil Nadu where I’m from but it didn’t really improve across india until globalization in 1991. South compared to north hasn’t still improved in terms of bias and treatment but you can really see it that much in big cities but you can definitely see some bias in society in tier 2 and 3 cities but not in law . Law improved right after independence in 1947 .
