04:Running for Governor
作者: Mark Twain(美国)
(Intermediate)
(Introduction)
Part 1: The Innocent Candidate
A few months ago, I was chosen as a candidate for the Governor. I believed I had a good chance to win because my record was clean, unlike my opponents, Mr. Blotz and Mr. Holcomb, who were known to be dishonest. I thought to myself, "At last, an honest man will lead this state." I felt proud and waited for the election to begin.
Part 2: The First Accusation
The very next morning, a newspaper published a letter. It was titled "A Question for the Candidate." It asked if I remembered the time I stole a poor widow's candy in a small village twenty years ago. I was shocked! I had never been to that village, and I certainly had never stolen candy. I wrote a reply to deny it, but the newspaper ignored my explanation and called me a "Heartless Thief."
Part 3: The Lies Multiply
Soon, more accusations appeared. Another newspaper accused me of burning down a hospital for orphans. Then, a third paper claimed that I had cheated my dead uncle out of his money. People on the street started looking at me with hatred. Children threw stones at me. No matter how much I tried to tell the truth, the lies grew faster. My reputation was being destroyed by "the power of the press."
Part 4: The Final Blow
The final blow came at a big public meeting. Nine children of different colors were sent onto the stage to hug my knees and call me "Father!" I had never seen these children before, but the crowd shouted in anger. I realized that the truth no longer mattered in a political race. I took my name off the list of candidates and wrote a letter: "I am no longer a candidate. I am now known as a thief, a murderer, and a fraud."
(Vocabulary List)

(Key Points & Insights)
- The Power of Rumors
- The Loss of Identity
(Grammar Focus)

2. "No matter how" 引导的让步状语从句
