12:The Stolen White Elephant
作者: Mark Twain(美国)
(Intermediate)
(Introduction)
(The Text)
Part 1: The Impossible Theft
A magnificent white elephant, a gift for the Queen of England, was stolen in Jersey City. It was a giant animal, weighing thousands of pounds, yet it vanished without a trace. The owner, in a state of panic, went to the office of Inspector Blunt, the most famous detective in the country. Blunt looked very professional. He touched his forehead and said, "Do not worry. We will use scientific methods to find it. No criminal can escape my department."
Part 2: The Detective’s "Perfect" Plan
Inspector Blunt did not go out to look for the elephant. Instead, he sat in his office and organized a massive army of detectives. He sent telegrams to every city in America. He ordered his men to describe every detail of the elephant: its trunk, its ivory, and its appetite. "We must gather all the facts," he said. "The elephant cannot hide for long." Meanwhile, the costs of the investigation began to rise, and the newspapers praised Blunt for his "brilliant" leadership.
Part 3: False Alarms
Soon, reports started coming in from all over the country. One detective claimed he saw the elephant riding a train; another said he saw it eating a whole garden in a faraway village. Blunt followed every lead, even the most ridiculous ones. He spent thousands of dollars rewarding his men for these "valuable" tips. However, the elephant was nowhere to be found. The public was impressed by the busy activity of the police, even though there was no result.
Part 4: The Dead Truth
A few weeks later, a terrible smell began to fill the basement of the very building where Inspector Blunt had his office. The police finally looked downstairs and found the white elephant. It had been there the whole time, dead from hunger. It had never even left the building! Despite this total failure, Inspector Blunt was not ashamed. He declared the case a "success" because his department had followed all the correct procedures. The owner was heartbroken, but the police department celebrated their "hard work."
(Vocabulary & Application)

(Key Points & Insights)
- The "White Elephant" Metaphor
(Grammar Focus)
- Example: “Despite this total failure, Inspector Blunt was not ashamed.”
2. "Nowhere to be found" 固定表达
- Example: “However, the elephant was nowhere to be found.”
3. "Without a trace" 的用法
