番外篇的内容是给英语补课的小朋友讲述精读的文章:
这一篇我们把目光投向俄国短篇小说巨匠——安东·契诃夫(Anton Chekhov)。
如果说马克·吐温的幽默是“辛辣”,王尔德的幽默是“毒舌”,那么契诃夫的幽默就是一种“含泪的笑”。这篇 《一个公务员之死》(The Death of a Government Clerk) 是世界文学史上描写“小人物心理压力”之作。

📖 整体介绍 (Introduction)
(The Text)
Part 1: The Sneeze
One fine evening, Ivan Chervyakov was sitting in the theater, watching a famous opera. He felt at peace with the world. Suddenly, his face wrinkled, his eyes closed, and—Achoo!—he sneezed. He wiped his face politely, but then he looked ahead. To his horror, he saw an old man wiping his bald head and neck. It was General Brizzhalov. "I have sprayed a General!" Chervyakov thought, trembling. "I must apologize immediately."
Part 2: The First Apology
Chervyakov leaned forward and whispered, "Excuse me, Your Excellency, I sprayed you by accident." The General replied kindly, "It's nothing, never mind." But Chervyakov was not satisfied. He thought the General looked too serious. After the opera, he approached the General again. "I didn't mean it, sir," he stammered. The General looked annoyed. "Oh, forget it! I had already forgotten about it!"
Part 3: The Obsession
Chervyakov went home, but he couldn't sleep. "He said he forgot, but there was a wicked light in his eyes," he thought. The next morning, he went to the General’s office to apologize yet again. There was a long line of people. When it was his turn, he started, "Yesterday, at the theater, if Your Excellency remembers..." The General shouted, "What a lot of nonsense! What do you want?" Chervyakov turned pale. "He thinks I am laughing at him!" he worried.
Part 4: The Final Breath
He returned to the office the next day for a final apology. The General, finally losing his patience, turned purple and screamed, "Get out! Get out of here!" Chervyakov felt something break inside him. He didn't hear anything, he didn't see anything. He walked home like a ghost, without taking off his uniform. He lay down on the sofa, and without saying a word, he died. He had literally worried himself to death over a sneeze.
📋 词汇表 (Vocabulary & Application)

💡 重点与逻辑 (Key Points & Insights)
- Over-thinking (过度解读):切尔维亚科夫的悲剧不在于那个喷嚏,而在于他对他人的反应进行了无止境的负面猜测。这在心理学上叫作“灾难化思维”。
- The Shadow of Authority (权威的阴影):在当时的社会背景下,等级森严。这种恐惧不仅是性格问题,更是社会制度对小人物的精神压迫。
- Chekhov’s Dark Humor (契诃夫式幽默):这种幽默不是让你哈哈大笑,而是让你感到一种荒谬的压抑。一个人因为一个喷嚏而死,这是极致的荒诞。
🔍 语法要点 (Grammar Focus)
1. "Had already forgotten" (过去完成时)
- Example: “The General said he had already forgotten about it!”
- 解析: 用于描述在过去某个动作(说话)之前就已经发生的动作(忘记)。
2. 现在分词做伴随状语 (Describing manner)
- Example: “Chervyakov walked home like a ghost, without taking off his uniform.”
- 解析: without doing 结构非常适合描写人物在某种异常状态下的行为细节。
3. "Would have done" 引导的虚拟(推测)
