大情节的主角通常是主动的,与世界搏斗;小情节的主角往往是被动的,更多地在内心挣扎。反情节则把时间打碎、颠倒,让你分不清先后。比如《坏时机》把一场恋爱的开始、中间、结尾像沙拉一样搅拌,告诉你:人的命运不取决于何时何地做了什么,而取决于你是谁。

从《征服者佩尔》里那个只能旁观悲剧的男孩,到《坏时机》中注定走向荒诞结局的情侣——故事的时间线可以线性能追,也可以碎片到让人眩晕。没有哪种更高明,只有哪种更贴近你想要捕捉的生命质地。

今天是我们朗读打卡的第19天,继续读罗伯特·麦基的《Story》。今天的内容围绕两个重要坐标:主角是主动还是被动?时间是线性还是非线性?

麦基首先区分了主动型主角被动型主角。大情节的主角通常是主动的——他想要什么,就冲出去争取,与世界碰撞。小情节的主角往往是被动的,不是懒,而是被命运或环境压制,只能在内心默默挣扎。比如《征服者佩尔》,一个孩子被成人世界支配,几乎没有选择,只能眼睁睁看着周围发生一系列惨剧——私通、杀婴、阉割、工人领袖被打成痴呆。但这些暴力场景都从孩子的视角被推远或藏在画外,整个故事变得克制而沉重。

这让我想起生活中那些“无力感”的时刻——你身处一场变动,却什么都做不了,只能看着事情发生。那种被动,有时比主动搏斗更消耗人。但麦基说,被动也可以成为独特的故事视角。

接下来,他讲了线性时间与非线性时间。大情节通常沿着一条可追踪的时间线前进,哪怕有闪回,观众也能理清先后。反情节则彻底打乱时间——比如电影《坏时机》,前三分之一闪回恋情的开始、中段、结尾混在一起;中间再插回开始和未来的闪前;最后大量呈现结局,却夹杂着中间和开始。你几乎没法按顺序拼出这对情侣的故事。导演戈达尔说过一句话:电影要有开头、中间和结尾,但不一定按这个顺序。

《坏时机》的核心不是事件的时间顺序,而是性格的化学反应。这对情侣从相遇那一刻起,就踏上了一条通往荒诞结局的子弹列车。时间顺序不重要,重要的是你是谁。

这让我想到,有些人生经历,哪怕你重新排列、打碎、倒带,核心的味道不会变。那是一种超越时间的“本质”。有些故事用线性的方式让你感受命运的因果;有些故事用破碎的方式让你直接品尝命运的质地。没有哪个更“正确”。

After seven hours of cleaning, Millie could finally lie straight in bed to rest. Thinking about how she used to sleep in the car backseat, she felt a little relieved, even though she found Mrs. Winchester not as nice as she had imagined. When she first received the job offer, she had thought the lady was sensitive and bossy.

She soon drifted off to sleep, but woke up with a start at 3:46 a.m. She was about to open the door and go to the bathroom, only to find the door was locked. Mrs. Winchester had locked her inside the bedroom. She could not figure out why and even wanted to call 911.

She sat on the bed thinking, staring at the scratches on the door, wondering if some poor woman had ever been trapped in this attic. She then noticed a small window on the other side of the room, which was locked too. She fell into despair.

Millie tried to force the door open, her heart beating faster. Eventually she realized it was just the old door that stuck and did not open smoothly. It was just a false alarm.
