Kia ora! Welcome back to the 'Kiwi English Booster'. This is Episode 6, and today we are talking about buying a used car. It's a good choice, but you need to ask the right questions to avoid any hidden problems. Let's listen to the conversation.
Speaker 1: Kia ora. I’m after a reliable SUV for the family. Need a decent-sized boot as well for the pram and luggage.
Speaker 2: Yeah mate, this one should do the job. Plenty of space in the back, and it’s been well looked after.
Speaker 1: Sweet. Does it come with a new WOF and rego?
Speaker 2: Yep. WOF was just done last week, and it’s got six months rego on it.
Speaker 1: Nice. Any major work been done recently? Cambelt and servicing all up to date?
Speaker 2: Yep, servicing’s all up to date. Cambelt was done not long ago as well.
Speaker 1: Good stuff. I noticed there aren’t any roof racks on it though. We do a few road trips now and then, so they’d be pretty handy.
Speaker 2: Ah yeah, shouldn’t be a problem. If we can sort out a deal, we can get some fitted for you.
Speaker 1: Sounds good. Mind if I take it for a test drive?
Speaker 2: Yeah of course, keys are here mate.
That was a great chat with some crucial car-buying vocabulary!
First, Boot. Spelled B-O-O-T. In New Zealand, this is what we call the trunk of the car.
Second, Pram. P-R-A-M. This is the Kiwi word for a baby stroller or pushchair.
Third, WOF. Spelled W-O-F. It stands for Warrant of Fitness, which is a mandatory safety check for vehicles.
Lastly, Rego. R-E-G-O. This is short for vehicle registration.
Now let's hear how it sounds in a busy environment with a natural, faster pace.
(Repeat Conversation at a natural pace)
Awesome! Now you know exactly what to ask when you are checking out vehicles at a car yard, from negotiating roof racks to checking the WOF and boot space. Thanks for tuning in to the Kiwi English Booster. Catch you later!
