Researchers have demonstrated that combining an HIV vaccine with an intravaginal ring delivering the drug SAMT-247 significantly reduces the risk of virus acquisition in macaques. This dual-intervention strategy achieved an 82.8% reduction in infection risk, outperforming the results of the vaccine or the drug-delivery device used in isolation. The study reveals that the continuous release of the microbicide strengthens mucosal immunity by expanding specific anti-inflammatory and regulatory cell populations.
