At the edge of the forest, little raccoon Chester clung tightly to his mother's hand

Tears rolling down his cheeks one after another

Tonight was his first night at school

But Chester didn't want to go at all

He wanted to stay home with his mother, play with his own toys, read his own books, and swing on his favorite little swing

"I'm not going to school," Chester cried, pleading with his mother

"I want to stay home"

Mother didn't rush him

She simply pulled him close and gently touched his ear

She knew that leaving the familiar home and walking into a completely strange place was truly hard for a little raccoon

Mother told him that some things, even if they seem strange and scary at first, still need to be done

Once he actually walked in, Chester would meet new friends, play with new toys, read new books

And discover that school wasn't as scary as he imagined

But Chester still kept his head down

Just then, Mother suddenly said

"I have a secret Maybe it can help you feel as warm at school as you do at home"

Chester lifted his face and wiped his tears

"What secret"

Mother said it was a very old secret

She had learned it from her own mother, and Grandma had learned it from family even longer ago

This secret was called the Kissing Hand

Mother took Chester's left hand, spread his tiny fingers apart one by one, making his palm open like a little fan

Then she leaned down and gently kissed the center of his palm

Chester was stunned at first

Then he felt the kiss travel from his palm, up his arm, over his shoulder, and finally settle into his heart

Even the dark mask on his face felt as if it had been softly touched by a wave of warmth

Mother told him that from now on, if he ever felt lonely or missed her at school, he should press that hand to his cheek and think

Mommy loves you

The kiss would jump to his face and send the warmth back into his heart

Then Mother playfully held his fingers together and warned him to be very careful not to lose the kiss

Chester asked worriedly if washing his hands would wash the kiss away

Mother smiled and told him no, it wouldn't

So Chester closed his hand tightly

He knew that his mother's love would go with him to school

No matter how far school was from home, whenever he wanted, he could find it right there in his palm

Night fell, and the lights of the forest school came on

Chester stood at the school gate, gazing at the tall tree

The little raccoon who had been crying moments ago suddenly turned around and said to his mother, "Give me your hand"

Mother held out her hand

Chester did exactly what Mother had done

He spread her fingers apart one by one, making her palm open like a little fan

Then he leaned down and carefully kissed the center of her palm

"Now you have a Kissing Hand too," he said

Mother looked at him, speechless

Chester waved goodbye to his mother, turned, and ran along the branch toward the school

His steps grew faster and faster, until he was almost dancing on the branches

The owl's bell rang, and the little animals of the forest filed into the school one by one

Mother still stood where she was

She lifted her left hand and pressed the kiss to her cheek

The warmth Chester had left in her palm slowly spread into her heart

In that moment, she seemed to hear a voice coming from her palm

Chester loves you

And up in the tree school, Chester had already walked into the light
