📚"went to leave" is very similar to "were about to leave". They can often be used interchangeably
📝They are both for telling a personal story, showing the sequence of events.
1️⃣"went to leave" focuses more on "an attempt to leave" but it was stopped by something. It slightly more casual and conversational.
Ex: We went to leave and the car wouldn't start.
Ex: I went to leave then I realized that I had no idea where I was going.
Ex: She went to leave, but the door was locked for some reason.
2️⃣were about to leave focusres more on timing. Something just happened befor leaving. It's more neutral. It doesn't necessarily mean that you were prevented that something happened stopped you from leaving.
Ex: We were about to leave when it started raining.
Ex: They were about to leave until they realized they forgot their passports.
🌼Role Play
A: Hey, I was about to call you.
B: Well, it looks like I beat you to it. how was your morning going?
A: Stressful. I was about to leave the house, but I couldn't find my key anywhere.
B: Oh, no! I hate one that happens, but what did you do?
A: I went to call my mum for the replacement, but as the phone was ringing, I found them in my jacket pocket.
A: Classic, that happens to me all the time.
B: But it didn't end there. When i finally wnt to laeve, the car wouldn't start.
A: Seriously? that's terrible.
B: I ended up calling Triple A and getting a jump start.
