All children grow up
Except one
Wendy Darling knew she would grow up one day
She ran in from the garden with a flower in her hand
Her mother looked at her and said, "I wish you could stay just like this forever"
The Darlings lived in London
Wendy had two little brothers, John and Michael
Their nanny was a big dog named Nana
But Mr. Darling thought it looked silly to have a dog watching the nursery
Some nights Wendy found leaves she'd never seen before by the window
She said Peter Pan had forgotten to wipe his feet
Her mother didn't believe her
What child could climb to a third-floor window
Then one night, Peter really did fly in
Nana lunged at him
Peter escaped, but his shadow got caught in the window and stayed behind
A week later, Mr. Darling had a tantrum over the medicine and Nana
He tied Nana up in the yard
Then he and Mrs. Darling went out to dinner
The children fell asleep
And the window softly opened
A boy landed on the floor
He wore clothes made of leaves
Next to him floated a tiny ball of light
It was Tinker Bell, a fairy
Peter rummaged through the drawers and found his shadow
He tried to stick it back on with soap
It wouldn't work
The boy who never admitted to crying sat on the floor and wept
Wendy woke up
She took out her sewing kit and stitched the shadow back onto Peter's feet
Peter was so happy he jumped around the room
Then he claimed he'd done it all himself
"Where do you live," Wendy asked
"Second star to the right," Peter said
"Straight on till morning"
Peter told her about Neverland
The Lost Boys lived there
They had no mother
No one told them stories or tucked them in
Wendy could come and do all that
Peter sprinkled fairy dust on the children and told them to think happy thoughts
The three children flew out the window, across London's night sky, toward Neverland
Neverland was fun by day and dangerous by night
Pirates, wild beasts, mermaids, and the Lost Boys all waited on the island
The scariest of all was Captain Hook
His right hand was a gleaming iron hook
Peter had cut off his real hand and fed it to a crocodile
The crocodile loved the taste of Hook so much it followed him everywhere
It had also swallowed a clock, so its belly went tick-tock, tick-tock
Whenever Hook heard that sound, his face went pale
Tinker Bell didn't like Wendy at all
She was jealous
She tricked the Lost Boy Tootles into shooting Wendy with an arrow
Wendy fell from the sky
But the arrow hit the acorn button she wore around her neck
She was alive, just knocked out
The boys didn't dare touch her
They gathered branches and blankets and built a little house around her
When Wendy woke up, the first thing she saw was a tiny door, just the right size for her to crawl through
She moved into the underground home
She told the boys stories about fathers and mothers
She sewed their clothes and mended their pockets
She reminded Peter to take his medicine
Sometimes Peter was like a little brother
Other times he was a proud captain
He liked having her there, but he'd never say how much she meant to him
Wendy began to miss home
She thought of her mother and the three empty beds
She decided to go back
John and Michael wanted to go too
The Lost Boys wanted to come along and see what a real home was like
Peter agreed to help them leave
His face showed nothing at all
But Hook was waiting
He led his pirates to the underground home
They captured Wendy and the boys
Then Hook found Peter fast asleep
He couldn't reach Peter through the hollow tree, so he dropped poison into Peter's medicine cup
Tinker Bell rushed back and told Peter everything
Peter reached for his cup
Tinker Bell threw herself at it and drank every drop
The little fairy fell to the ground
Her light grew dim, flickering like a candle in the wind
For the first time, Peter was truly afraid
He begged anyone who believed in fairies to prove it
He asked them to believe Tinker Bell was still alive
Slowly, her light flickered back
She opened her eyes
Peter flew to the pirate ship
Wendy was tied to the mast
The boys were being forced to walk the plank
Then a sound echoed across the deck
Tick-tock Tick-tock
Hook thought the crocodile had climbed aboard
He trembled
But it wasn't the crocodile who stepped out of the shadows
It was Peter
Peter freed Wendy and the boys
Then he fought Hook alone
The iron hook swung across the deck
Peter was pushed to the edge, then sprang back
Finally, Hook was wounded
Peter held out his hand
Hook refused it and fell into the sea
The crocodile was waiting
Peter sailed the pirate ship back to London
Wendy, John, and Michael flew to the nursery window
It was still open
Their mother sat inside, waiting
Mr. Darling had been living in Nana's doghouse ever since he tied her up
He was waiting for his children to come home, and punishing himself too
The Lost Boys found a new family
But Peter refused to stay
Mrs. Darling asked if he wanted to be adopted too
Go to school Work in an office
Peter stepped back
No one could catch him and make him grow up
Wendy wanted to go with him
Her mother held her tight
"Peter needs a mother," she said
"But you need one too"
Peter promised to come back every spring and take Wendy to Neverland for spring cleaning
The first year, he came
The second year, Wendy waited in a new dress
He never came
Years passed
Wendy grew up
She got married
She had a daughter named Jane
One night, Peter flew into the nursery again
He still had his baby teeth
He still hadn't grown up at all
He saw Wendy and could hardly believe she was a grown-up
Wendy couldn't fly anymore
So Peter took Jane by the hand and flew her to Neverland
Jane grew up too
She had a daughter named Margaret
Every spring, Peter sometimes forgot to come
But sometimes he came and took Margaret to Neverland
She would tell him stories about himself
And Peter would sit there, listening, as if hearing them for the very first time
