Deep in the Seeonee Hills of India, the night was dry and hot

Father Wolf and Mother Wolf Raksha had just heard their cubs stir, when a heavy, hoarse voice came from the cave mouth

It was Shere Khan the lame tiger

He had attacked a human camp, and a man and woman had run for their lives, leaving their tiny baby behind in the jungle

He'd lost the grown-ups, but he'd smelled the child

He followed the scent to the wolf den and demanded the "man's cub"

Raksha stepped in front of her cubs

She didn't back down

Bagheera the black panther stepped out of the shadows

He had brought a freshly killed bull

In the jungle, a bull can buy a life

He used the bull to buy the human boy's right to live with the pack

Old Akela the wolf chief nodded his head

Baloo the brown bear volunteered to be the boy's teacher, to teach him the Law of the Jungle and every animal's language

They named him Mowgli

It means "frog", because he was bare and smooth, with no fur at all

And so Mowgli grew up with the wolf pack

He didn't remember humans, or his parents, or the night Shere Khan had hunted him

He only remembered the warmth of Raksha's belly, and Bagheera's cool fur as they hunted at night

And he remembered Baloo's deep, patient voice, saying the Law of the Jungle again and again

The jungle had laws

The only ones who didn't follow them were the monkey people, and every tribe looked down on them

But the monkeys came to Mowgli anyway, promising a world with no rules

Mowgli went with them

He thought freedom meant never following rules

Later, Kaa the python saved him

Kaa was the oldest creature in the jungle, his body able to rise from the ground to the treetops

After that day, Mowgli understood that a place without laws isn't freedom

It's chaos

But Shere Khan kept waiting

He waited for Akela to grow old

The pack rule was simple, if a wolf chief missed his kill, he was no longer fit to lead

Shere Khan bribed the young wolves with meat, winning them over one by one

He told them Akela was old, that it was time for him to step down, and time to give up the man's cub

Bagheera told Mowgli all of this ahead of time

He also told him something else, that humans had something every animal feared

Fire

They called it the Red Flower

Mowgli went to the human village and stole fire from a clay pot

He didn't know what fire was, but by the time he ran back, his hands were covered in blisters

On the Council Rock in the moonlight, Akela was about to be killed

Mowgli burst in, holding the pot of fire

He flung fire at Shere Khan's face, scorching the whiskers on one side

He waved the burning stick at the bribed wolves, and they tucked their tails and backed away

Mowgli told Shere Khan he would come back and kill him

Then he turned and walked into the human village

He was not yet ten years old

In the village lived a woman named Messua

The moment she saw Mowgli, she cried and said he was her child, the one the tiger had carried away years ago

Mowgli couldn't speak the human language, but Messua taught him word by word

He learned quickly

He slept in a bed, ate cooked food, and learned to bend down and plow the fields

He didn't forget Shere Khan

His wolf brother Grey Brother watched the tiger's moves from the jungle edge

Shere Khan was older now, and lamer too, but he still waited

He slept in the valley outside the village, waiting for the day Mowgli was alone

Mowgli didn't wait for him

He split the village buffalo herd into two groups

He led one, and Grey Brother led the other

They charged into the valley from both ends at once

Horns and hooves crowded the narrow valley floor

Shere Khan had nowhere to run

He died under the buffalo's trampling feet

Mowgli skinned the tiger, threw the pelt over his shoulders, and walked back to the Council Rock

He spread the skin on the spot where Shere Khan used to sit

The wolves who had betrayed him lowered their heads and dared not look at him

But the village didn't want him anymore

The villagers saw he could command buffalo and talk to wolves

They called him a demon and drove him out with stones

Messua was punished too

Mowgli stood in the clearing between the village and the jungle

Neither place felt like home

He stayed in the jungle for a few more years, hunting with his four wolf brothers

Baloo and Bagheera still sat with him in the moonlight, just like before

But something had changed

In the spring of his seventeenth year, a strange restlessness stirred inside him

All the hinds were running, all the birds were molting, Kaa shed his skin, and Baloo grew a new coat

Mowgli had everything he needed, but he couldn't sit still

He ran to the village edge and watched human life from far away

He didn't go in

He just watched

That night, when he returned to Baloo and Bagheera, he suddenly cried

Jungle animals never cried in front of others

Baloo and Bagheera watched him in silence

They said nothing

They knew what it was

He said goodbye to his four wolf brothers, to Baloo, to Bagheera

Bagheera just rubbed his head against Mowgli's leg

He walked down the hillside, toward the human world he'd never truly belonged to

Behind him was the jungle that had raised him

Ahead of him were the humans he hadn't yet learned to understand
