[Mike]: Welcome back to "Learn English with Podcasts"! Sarah, quick question - if the most important engineer at your company told you they were leaving, what would happen?

[Sarah]: The company would probably panic! Wait, did that actually happen somewhere?

[Mike]: Bigger than that. Jeff Dean - the legend of Google - just announced he's leaving to start his own company.

[Sarah]: Jeff Dean? The name rings a bell, but why is he such a big deal?

zh:Jeff Dean?

[Mike]: He helped build Google's earliest systems. Later, he led Gemini - Google's biggest AI project. He's one of the most famous computer scientists in the world.

[Sarah]: So he's like the captain of the whole ship?

[Mike]: Exactly. In fact, only one other engineer in the company had the same top rank as him.

[Sarah]: Then the stock market must have reacted badly, right?

[Mike]: You guessed it. Google's stock dropped about four percent in a single day. That's one hundred eighty-six billion dollars - gone, just like that.

[Sarah]: One hundred eighty-six billion? That's more money than most countries make in a whole year!

[Mike]: And it gets even more interesting. Jeff isn't leaving alone. Three other top researchers are going with him.

[Sarah]: A whole team leaving together? Who are these people?

[Mike]: Sanjay Ghemawat, who built Google's early storage systems. Quoc Le, one of the founders of Google Brain. And Oriol Vinyals, who worked on many famous AI projects.

[Sarah]: Four legends walking out the door together. So what will the new company do?

[Mike]: It's called Discovery Loop. Their dream is to teach AI to do science and engineering on its own - research, build, and solve problems without humans.

[Sarah]: That's a beautiful dream. But wait - did Jeff leave Google in an angry way?

[Mike]: Surprisingly, no. Google even invested in the new company and became its cloud partner. But before that, Google's CEO really tried to keep him.

[Sarah]: Then why leave? The company is kind to you and gives you money...

[Mike]: Because big companies move slowly. There's a word for it - inertia. When you want to build something brand new, a small team can move much faster.

[Sarah]: So he traded the safety of a big company for the speed of a small team?

[Mike]: Exactly. And here's the funny part - Google had a chatbot idea before ChatGPT was even born. But it was too careful to launch it.

[Sarah]: Wow. So being too careful can actually be the biggest risk of all?

[Mike]: That's the lesson. And other top AI scientists have left Google recently too. When smart people can't move fast, they go where they can.

[Sarah]: You know, this reminds me of birds. When a few birds leave the flock, others follow. Suddenly, the sky is full of new paths.

[Mike]: That's a lovely way to see it. Maybe the real story isn't one person leaving - it's a whole sky opening up for something new.

[Sarah]: Honestly? If someone like Jeff Dean can start fresh, maybe we can too. Thanks, Mike - that was inspiring.

[Mike]: Glad you enjoyed it. And to our listeners - if you ever feel stuck, remember his bold move. See you next time on "Learn English with Podcasts"!
