Episode: Why 600 Degrees Is the Danger Line for Your Eyes
Duration: approximately 7 minutes
Level: B1 (Intermediate)
---
[Mike]: Welcome back to "Learn English with Podcasts"! Sarah, quick question. Have you ever looked at your glasses and thought, wow, these lenses are getting thick?
zh:欢迎回到"Learn English with Podcasts"!Sarah,问个快问题。
[Sarah]: All the time! My prescription went up again last year. But here is the scary thing - I saw something trending online. It said that 600 degrees is the danger line for my eyes. What does that even mean?
[Mike]: Great question. First, let's talk about what those numbers mean. If your prescription is below 300 degrees, doctors call it low myopia. Between 300 and 600, it is medium myopia. At 600 or above, it becomes high myopia.
[Sarah]: So 600 degrees is just a number that makes you sound worse than your friends at the eye check-up?
[Mike]: Not just a number, I'm afraid. The World Health Organization and China's own medical guides both use 600 degrees as the line. And the reason is real science about your eyeball.
[Sarah]: Eyeball science? Okay, you have my attention. Tell me more.
[Mike]: Picture this. A normal eyeball is about 22 to 24 millimeters long, from front to back. But when your myopia reaches 600 degrees, that eyeball stretches. It grows to more than 26 millimeters. That's a big change for such a small organ.
[Sarah]: Okay, like when you pull a balloon - it gets longer, but the rubber gets thinner.
[Mike]: Exactly! That is the perfect picture. When the eyeball stretches, the back wall gets thin. The retina - the part that helps you see - and the other layers become weaker. Thin walls break more easily. And that is why doctors worry so much.
[Sarah]: So what actually can go wrong? If I just wear thicker glasses, am I safe?
[Mike]: Not really. Glasses help you see, but they don't protect the layers inside. People with high myopia face higher risks of cataracts, glaucoma, and problems with the retina. One more thing - high myopia raises the risk of a very serious condition where the retina comes loose. That needs urgent treatment.
[Sarah]: That sounds serious. Is this actually common, or just rare bad luck?
[Mike]: More common than people think. Studies predict that almost half of the world will be short-sighted by 2050. And about one in ten people with high myopia may lose their sight completely one day. One in ten, Sarah.
[Sarah]: One in ten? That shut me up. So my parents are both short-sighted. Does that mean I got this from them?
[Mike]: Partly, yes. If both of your parents are short-sighted, your chance of being short-sighted is about 43 percent. If only one parent is, the chance drops to around 15 percent. If neither parent is, it is just 7 percent. So the lottery ticket is partly shared at home.
[Sarah]: Okay, so genetics matters. But here's my last hope - can laser surgery just fix everything?
[Mike]: This is the big misunderstanding. Laser surgery helps you see without glasses. But it cannot change the shape of your eyeball. The stretched retina is still stretched. The risks stay with you for life.
[Sarah]: So the damage is permanent. Then what can people who are already high myopia actually do?
[Mike]: Plenty! First, protect the eyes. Try to avoid hard sports that hit the head, like boxing or diving. Goggles are a good friend for fast ball games. And skip wild rides at the theme park - the sudden shaking is not kind to a thin retina.
[Sarah]: Got it - no boxing, and I'll wave goodbye to roller coasters. What else?
[Mike]: Regular check-ups. Go to the eye doctor about once a year for a full check of the back of the eye. And if you suddenly see floating specks, flashes of light, or blurry areas, do not wait. Go to a doctor quickly.
[Sarah]: So the real message is: take your glasses seriously, because they are a warning about your whole eye health.
[Mike]: Exactly. 600 degrees is not the end of the world. But it is a sign to start taking better care. If your eyes are a gift, treat them like it.
[Sarah]: Great advice. Thanks for listening to "Learn English with Podcasts"! If you wear glasses too, give them a little cleaning before you go.
zh:好建议。感谢收听"Learn English with Podcasts"!
[Mike]: See you next time! And remember - your eyes work hard for you every day.
