In the busiest street of Baghdad, a porter leaned against a rich merchant's wall to catch his breath

He carried a sack of rice on his back

His name was Sinbad, just like the owner of the house

But their lives were as different as night and day

He looked up at the carved door and sighed

The door opened

The owner invited him in, served him food and wine, and asked why he sighed

The porter said, "I carry rice all day longI earn less than the price of half a chickenhow come you live in such a big house and wear such fine clothes"

The owner laughed

"Do you think this house came freesit down, and I'll tell you how I got everything I own"

When I was young, my father left me a lot of money

I spent it on parties and fun

In a few years, it was all gone

When I had nothing left but a bed, I sold the bed

I bought goods and sailed away with the merchants

I told myself, either I win back my father's fortune, or I die at sea

On my first voyage, our ship stopped by a small island

We went ashore to build a fire and cook

Suddenly, the "island" began to move

It wasn't an island at all

It was a giant whale, fast asleep

The whale got scared and dove into the sea

The ship sailed away without me

I grabbed a piece of wood and drifted on the sea for a whole day and night

A merchant ship picked me up

By luck, my old ship's goods were still safe, and the captain gave them all back to me

I sold the goods, made a good profit, and went home to Baghdad

But I didn't keep that money for long

On my second voyage, I overslept on a desert island

When I woke up, the ship was gone

All alone, I found a huge egg

It was a roc's egg

I tied myself to the bird's leg

When the roc flew, it carried me into the Valley of Diamonds

That valley was full of diamonds, everywhere you looked

But giant snakes, thick as tree trunks, coiled at the bottom

Anyone who landed there would die

I filled a bag with diamonds

Then I saw a piece of meat fall from the mountaintop, and a huge eagle swooped down to grab it

Then I understood

The merchants on the mountaintop used meat to lure the eagles, so the birds would carry diamonds up to them

So I tied myself to a piece of meat

An eagle carried me up to the mountaintop

The merchants were shocked

I shared my diamonds with them and took a bag home to Baghdad

On my third voyage, a storm blew our ship to the land of cannibals

A giant roasted my friends one by one on a spit

My friends and I took red-hot iron rods and poked out the giant's eyes

We ran to the sea and built a raft

The giant chased us with his friends and threw stones

They sank our raft, and two of my friends were caught and eaten

I drifted alone to another island, where a group of merchants saved me

I came home with new wealth

My fourth voyage was the closest I ever came to death

After my ship was wrecked, I drifted to an island of savages

The people there caught us and fed us grass, fattening us up like animals before they ate us

My friends were eaten one by one

But I refused to eat the grass

I grew thin as a stick, so nobody paid me any mind

One night, I slipped away

I climbed over the mountain and reached a polite country, where I got married

But my wife fell sick and died

In that land, when a wife dies, the husband must be buried with her

They threw me into a deep pit

The pit was full of food and water left by earlier burials, and full of bones too

I lived on that food

One day, a wild beast crawled in through a hole in the wall

I followed it and found a way out

I climbed out of the pit, and some passing merchants saved me

I went home to Baghdad with treasure

On my fifth voyage, I met something even scarier

A white-bearded old man climbed onto my shoulders, and he wouldn't get off

They call him the Old Man of the Sea

He rode me by day and by night

He ate and slept on my back

He used me like a donkey, and I carried him for years

Then one day, I picked grapes and made wine

The old man drank too much and fell into a deep sleep

I threw him off my shoulders, and he fell to the ground and died

At last I was free

I caught a ship and went home

On my sixth voyage, my ship was wrecked again

I drifted to an island covered with jewels

There I found an underground river

I built a raft and floated down it for days and nights

Some merchants downstream fished me out

They sent me home to Baghdad

Only then did I learn that the river ran all the way to the edge of Baghdad

On my seventh voyage, I ran into pirates, and they sold me as a slave

My master made me shoot elephants with a bow and arrow to get their ivory

Day after day, I shot arrows into the elephant herd

Then one day, the elephants led me to a secret place

It was piled high with ivory

It was the elephants' own graveyard, where they came to bury their kind

I told my master the secret, and he gave me a big share of the treasure

With ivory and gold, I came back to Baghdad one last time

Sinbad finished his story

He looked at the porter and said, "You ask me why I live in such a big houseseven voyages, and seven times I nearly died at seaI barely escaped with my lifethis house was bought with my life"

He told his steward to bring a bag of gold coins and gave it to the porter

Porter Sinbad took the coins and couldn't speak

From that day on, the two Sinbads were friends

And the porter never sighed at the street corner again
