In the deep mountains of Persia there lived a poor woodcutter named Ali Baba
His rich brother Cassim ate well with his wife, while Ali Baba could hardly feed his own family
One day Ali Baba heard the thunder of many horses and saw yellow dust fill the sky
Forty riders galloped up, each with a long sword at his side
Their captain stood before a huge rock and cried out, "Open, Sesame"
The rock split open, and inside lay a cave piled high with gold and silver
When the riders left, Ali Baba called out the same magic words and stepped inside
He took only a few bags of gold, just enough to keep his family well
But those few bags of gold would soon bring great danger to his door
His brother's wife smeared wax on the bottom of the scale and found a gold coin stuck there
That night Cassim forced his poor brother to tell him the secret of the cave
The next morning Cassim drove ten donkeys up the mountain and cried, "Open, Sesame"
He filled bag after bag with treasure until he heard horses outside
But in his fear he forgot the magic words and shouted barley and wheat instead
The stone door would not move, no matter what name he called
The thieves found Cassim, cut him into four pieces, and hung them at the cave door
Ali Baba crept up the mountain and froze when he saw what had happened
He carried the body home in secret, too afraid to tell a single soul
Then the clever maidservant Morgiana stepped forward with a plan
She brought a blindfolded tailor to sew the broken body whole again
The family told the whole town that Cassim had died of a sudden sickness
The forty thieves found the body gone and knew someone else shared their secret
The captain drew a white chalk circle on Ali Baba's gate in the night
Morgiana saw it and drew the same circle on every gate along the street
The thieves came and stamped their feet in fury at dozens of white circles
Then the captain dressed as an oil merchant and sent his men to hide in great oil jars
At night Morgiana heard a whisper from a jar, "Is it time yet"
She boiled oil and poured it into every jar to burn the hidden thieves
Later the captain returned as a silk merchant, but Morgiana knew his eyes at once
While she danced she drove a dagger into the captain's heart and saved the family
Ali Baba thanked her with tears, and Morgiana married into his family and lived in joy
And the stone door with its treasure stayed shut, while the mountain wind blew year after year
