It was Sunday and the rain had just started to fall as CJ and his nana stepped out of the church

They stood under a gray sky at the bus stop and rain tapped on Nana's flowered umbrella

CJ looked up and asked "Why do we have to stand in the rain to wait for the bus"

Nana smiled and said "Look the big tree is drinking too It's been thirsty all week"

A car slid past them and CJ's friend Colby sat inside waving

The car drove away warm and dry and CJ whispered "Why don't we have a car"

Nana didn't hesitate "Don't we have a big bus that breathes fire and the driver even does magic"

The bus pulled up the door opened and the driver winked at CJ

On the bus CJ saw two older boys each with big headphones bobbing their heads to the beat

"Why don't I have one of those" he asked and Nana pointed out the window

"Somebody out there is sitting under a tree listening to the birds sing That one doesn't need charging and it can't be plugged into your ears"

The bus rolled on and a blind man stepped aboard with his guide dog

"Why can't he see" CJ asked and Nana said "Some people see with their ears"

CJ went quiet and watched the blind man's ear twitch like he was hearing something very soft

The bus passed an old dirty road with faded paint on the walls and a trash can tipped by the curb

"It's dirty here" CJ said and Nana said "The more you stand in a dirty place the better you can see what is truly beautiful"

A man with a guitar sat down and strummed a few chords and the music spread like water

CJ closed his eyes and heard it climb high then settle softly onto everyone

When he opened his eyes everyone on the bus was smiling and even the guide dog slowly wagged its tail

The driver called out "Market Street last stop"

CJ knew this road well with cracks in the ground and broken bottles by the wall

"Why is it always here" he asked and Nana said "The most beautiful things are often right in front of your eyes"

They walked into a low building on Market Street and warmth and the smell of good food rushed out

CJ saw so many familiar faces Somebody waved at him somebody called his name

Nana put on an apron and ladled food onto plate after plate and CJ stood on his tiptoes to pass the plates along

He looked at the people holding their plates and said "Nana I'm glad we came"

Nana looked at him and said nothing She just smiled bright as the brightest lamp in the room
