Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson lived at 221B Baker Street in London

One autumn morning, a country doctor named Mortimer came to see them

He held an old, yellowed paper in his hands

"The Baskerville family," he said, "has been cursed for many, many years"

Long ago, a wild man named Hugo Baskerville chased a girl across the moor

He set his hounds after her

When his friends found him, he lay on the dark moor with his throat torn open

A huge black hound stood over him, with fire in its eyes

Since that night, the men of the Baskerville family died alone on the moor, one by one

Now the curse seemed to strike again

Sir Charles Baskerville was found dead on the Yew Alley outside the great house

His face was frozen in fear

Beside him in the muddy ground were the footprints of a huge hound

Doctor Mortimer was afraid for the next heir

He was a young man named Sir Henry, who had just come home from Canada

If the curse was real, he would be the next to die

Holmes didn't go to Devonshire at once

He sent Watson to go with Sir Henry to Baskerville Hall

"Write to me," he said, "and tell me everything that happens"

The old house was huge and cold

At night the wind blew in from the moor, like something roaring far away

On the moor, Watson met a naturalist named Stapleton and his sister

The sister was lovely, but she said one thing to Sir Henry that Watson never forgot

"Go back to London," she whispered

"Don't stay on the moor"

Sir Henry didn't listen

He was falling in love with the girl

Strange things followed

The housekeeper's wife crept out at night to bring food to a convict on the moor, her own brother

Watson saw a lone figure standing far off in the mist

Then came the terrible night

The convict was found dead, wearing Sir Henry's old clothes

Something huge had torn his throat

"It was the hound," people said

"The hound mistook him for Sir Henry"

Just when Watson was losing hope, he found a man hiding in a little stone hut on the moor

It was Holmes

He had been there all along

And Holmes told the whole truth

There was no curse at all

Stapleton, the quiet naturalist, was the real Baskerville

He had come to the moor in secret

He had spread the legend and bought a giant hound, and he painted it with phosphorus so that it glowed in the dark

First he scared Sir Charles to death, for Sir Charles had a weak heart

Now he meant to kill Sir Henry and take the whole estate

His so-called sister was really his wife, and he kept her locked up, beaten and bruised

That night, the fog rolled in over the moor

Stapleton laid a trap and sent Sir Henry walking home alone through the mist

The hound sprang out, glowing green, with a low growl rolling in its throat

Guns roared

Holmes, Watson, and Inspector Lestrade all fired at once

The giant hound fell into the mud and never rose again

Stapleton turned and ran toward the marsh, the mire that swallows men whole

The next morning, people found a line of footprints leading into the deep marsh, and then nothing

Sir Henry was very ill, and he was sent away to rest

When he came home, the fog had lifted

And the house was quiet at night again

The eyes in the dark never gleamed again
