Barber: Kia ora, mate! Take a seat. What are we doing for you today? Customer: Kia ora. I just need a bit of a tidy up, please. It's getting too long. Barber: Sweet as. How much do you want off the top? Customer: Just a trim, maybe a couple of centimetres off the top. Barber: And what about the sides and the back? Customer: Just a short back and sides, please. Maybe a number two on the clippers. Barber: A number two on the sides, no worries. How about the fringe? Customer: Keep the fringe a bit longer so I can sweep it to the side. Oh, and can you thin it out a bit? It's quite thick. Barber: Yeah, absolutely. I'll use the thinning scissors. All done, mate. What do you reckon? Customer: Yeah, choice. Exactly what I was after. That was a successful trip to the barber! Let's break down the vocabulary. First, a tidy up. This means a small haircut just to make it look neat. Second, a trim. T-R-I-M. This also means cutting off just a little bit of hair. Third, short back and sides. A very common and classic men's haircut style. Fourth, number two on the clippers. Clippers are electric hair clippers, and the numbers are the guard sizes. A number two is quite short. Fifth, fringe. F-R-I-N-G-E. This is the hair that hangs down over your forehead. In American English, it's called 'bangs', but in New Zealand, it's a fringe. Sixth, thin it out. If your hair is very thick, the barber can thin it out to remove some volume. Finally, choice. Meaning excellent or great. Now let's hear the conversation again at a normal speed.
