In this episode, we speak with Lúcia Nagib, Professor of Film at the University of Reading, film scholar, and filmmaker, about her film Films to Die For—a cinematic essay on cinephilia, film history, death, and the ever-changing nature of cinema.
What does “cinephilia” mean today, and how did it evolve from a passion for movies into a broader cultural and creative practice? Why did Nagib choose to make a film rather than write another book about cinema? And why does her film begin with Wim Wenders’ The State of Things (Der Stand der Dinge) and connect its fictional meditation on death with the real death of Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha?
We also discuss Nagib’s recent engagement with Chinese cinema, her interest in women’s filmmaking and the idea of “dying for art,” as well as her thoughts on the future of cinema in an age shaped by digital technology and AI.
For us at C2T, this conversation became something more than an interview. It brought us back to a question at the heart of why we watch and talk about films in the first place: what does it mean to love cinema—and why do we keep believing in it, even when cinema seems to die again and again?
