A Swedish health technology company called Flow Neuroscience has launched a new headset in the United States that treats depression at home, without medication. The device, called FL-100, is the first at-home brain stimulation treatment for depression approved by the F-D-A, America's health authority. Users wear it on their forehead for thirty minutes a day, while a mobile app guides each session. It sends a gentle electrical current to the front part of the brain, an area that controls mood. In a trial of one hundred seventy-four people, forty-five percent of users saw their symptoms disappear after ten weeks, compared with just twenty-two percent using a fake device. The headset has been available in Europe since twenty nineteen, and more than sixty-five thousand people have tried it. However, it is not cheap: the treatment costs two thousand two hundred dollars for ten weeks, and patients still need a doctor's prescription. The company hopes it will offer a new choice for millions of people who take antidepressants.
