[Sarah]: 8 days? No way. I get nervous when my phone is off for one hour. What happened?
zh:8天？不可能。我的手机关机一小时我就紧张了。发生什么了？
[Mike]: A 17-year-old boy did it in real life. His name is Jike Guosha, from Liangshan, Sichuan. On Sept 2, he went into the Daxinganling forest to pick pine cones.
zh:一个17岁男孩在现实里做到了。他叫吉克果沙，来自四川凉山。9月2号，他走进大兴安岭森林去采松塔。
[Sarah]: Pine cones? You mean the brown nuts from pine trees? Why was he there?
zh:松塔？你是说松树上那种棕色的果子？他为什么在那里？
[Mike]: Yes, people buy them for money. It was his first day on the job. He followed other workers in the morning near Alongshan Town in Inner Mongolia. Around noon, he lost his way back.
zh:对，人们收这个能卖钱。那是他第一天上工。那天早晨，他在内蒙古阿龙山镇附近跟着工友进山。中午左右，他把回去的路走丢了。
[Sarah]: Oh no, on his first day? Did he have food or a phone with him?
zh:天啊，第一天就迷路了？他身上带吃的或者手机了吗？
[Mike]: Nothing. No food, no phone. He only ate a small bowl of noodles that morning. He wore a short-sleeve shirt with a cotton coat, thin pants, and borrowed cloth shoes two sizes too small.
zh:什么都没带。没有吃的，没有手机。那天早晨他只吃了一小碗素面。他穿着短袖外面套棉袄、一条单裤，脚上是借来的小了两个码的布鞋。
[Sarah]: That sounds freezing. Daxinganling nights in September are already below zero, right?
zh:听起来太冷了。9月的大兴安岭夜里已经零下了，对吧？
[Mike]: Yes, below zero. And the forest is huge, with deep valleys and no real roads. There are bears and lynx inside. His family and rescue teams searched for 8 days, but they could not find him.
zh:对，零下。森林特别大，沟壑纵横，没有像样的路。里面还有棕熊和猞猁。他的家人和救援队找了8天，一直没找到他。
[Sarah]: So how did he stay alive? Water is the first problem, right?
zh:那他怎么活下来的？水是第一个难题，对吧？
[Mike]: He remembered one sentence from his father: follow the river, and you can walk out. So he stayed close to water and drank about 1 liter of spring water and river water every day.
zh:他记住爸爸的一句话：沿着河走，就能走出来。所以他一直挨着水走，每天喝大约1升山泉水和河水。
[Sarah]: Survive on water. That is a useful phrase. To survive on something means to stay alive with only that thing. But water has no energy. He must be so hungry.
zh:靠水活下来。这是个有用的表达。Survive on something 就是只靠那样东西活着。但水没有能量。他一定饿坏了。
[Mike]: The first three days were the worst. Hunger felt like it was eating him. He carried about 30 jin of pine cones on his back, worth just over 100 yuan. On the second day, he threw them away.
zh:前三天最难熬。饥饿像在啃他。他背上背着大约30斤松塔，只值100多块钱。第二天，他把它们扔了。
[Sarah]: He threw away his pay? That must be a hard choice for a boy who came to earn money.

[Mike]: He had to. His legs were weak. He saw fish in the river, but the water was too cold to go in. He saw wild blueberries and mushrooms, but he was afraid they were poisonous, so he did not eat them.

[Sarah]: Smart and sad. After he came out, local people told him some of them were safe to eat. Did he see any animals?

[Mike]: Only three big deer. He thought they ate grass, so they were safe, and he felt happy. Later he learned they were moose, called gandahan locally. Luckily, he never met a bear. His family met one brown bear during the search.

[Sarah]: Wow, he is so lucky. Cold, hunger, wild animals. How did he sleep?

[Mike]: He slept under big trees, curled up small. He woke up frozen, then fell asleep again. On the fourth day, he felt dizzy and weak. At night, he started to see things that were not there.
zh:他睡在大树底下，缩成一团。冻醒了，又继续睡。第四天，他觉得头晕乏力。晚上，他开始出现幻觉。
[Sarah]: Hallucinations? Like dreaming while awake? What did he see?
zh:幻觉？像醒着做梦？他看到了什么？
[Mike]: He saw crowds of people and food stalls, like the factory area where he once worked. One night he dreamed he was eating a lot. By the fifth day, it rained for half an hour. His clothes got wet, and he almost lost hope.
zh:他看到周围全是人，还有路边摊，就像他以前打工的工厂外面。一晚他梦见自己在大吃大喝。第五天，下了半小时雨。衣服湿了，他差点失去希望。
[Sarah]: Five days alone in the cold dark. I cannot imagine it. He even thought about his family holding a funeral for him. What kept him going?
zh:一个人在又冷又黑的森林里待五天，我无法想象。他甚至想到家人为他办丧事。是什么让他撑下去的？
[Mike]: He thought about his parents. He said he had not yet paid them back for raising him. He did not want to die like that. Then, through the trees, he saw something high on a far mountain. It looked like a signal tower.
zh:他想到了父母。他说还没报答他们的养育之恩，不甘心就这样死掉。然后，透过树梢，他看到远处高山上有个东西。看起来像一座信号塔。
[Sarah]: A signal tower! With no phone, a tower means people. Did he walk toward it?
zh:信号塔！没有手机的时候，塔就意味着有人。他朝它走了吗？
[Mike]: Yes. It was actually a fire lookout tower in the Hanma Nature Reserve. He thought he could reach it in one day. But the mountain road went up and down. It took him three days and three nights.
zh:对。那其实是汗马自然保护区的防火瞭望塔。他以为一天能到。但山路起伏，他走了三天三夜。
[Sarah]: To hold on for three more days when you are already empty. That phrase, hold on, means keep going and do not give up. Did rescuers see him on the way?
zh:已经耗空了，还要再撑三天。Hold on 这个短语就是坚持住、别放弃的意思。救援队在路上看到他了吗？
[Mike]: They missed each other. Rescue helicopters flew for three days, on Sept 7, 8 and 9. He only heard the noise. Rescuers searched to the north, but he first went east, then turned south toward the tower. He walked about 30 km, while the tower was only more than 10 km away in a straight line.
zh:他们错过了。救援直升机连飞三天，9月7、8、9号。他只听到了轰鸣。救援队往北找，但他先往东，又转向南往塔走。他大约走了30公里，而塔直线距离只有10多公里。
[Sarah]: 30 km on an empty stomach, in small shoes. On the last night, I heard he found an old tent?
zh:饿着肚子、穿着小鞋走了30公里。听说最后一晚，他找到一顶旧帐篷？
[Mike]: Yes. He drank some clean water there and ate two biscuits that were a little soft. There was also bread, but it was moldy, so he did not touch it. He slept in the tent and thought, tomorrow I will reach the tower.

[Mike]: He reached the tower and saw a small house with smoke. Inside were two guards. His voice was hoarse. He said, do you have anything to eat? I have not eaten for many days.
zh:他走到塔前，看到一处冒烟的小房子。里面有两名守塔员。他的声音沙哑了。他说，你们这儿有没有吃的？我好多天没吃饭了。
[Sarah]: The guards already knew about him, right? Hot water first, then thin porridge, then chicken soup. They did not let him eat too much at once.
zh:守塔员早就知道他在走失，对吧？先端来热水，再煮稀饭、熬鸡汤。没敢让他一下子吃太多。
[Mike]: Exactly. He is 175 cm tall. His weight fell from 145 jin to 125 jin. That is 20 jin in 8 days. Except for small cuts, he was okay. When he met his family, the strong boy finally cried.
zh:没错。他身高175厘米。体重从145斤掉到125斤。8天掉了20斤。除了小外伤，他没大碍。见到家人的时候，这个坚强的男孩终于哭了。
[Sarah]: His family drove more than 50 hours from Sichuan, over ten relatives came. I understand those tears. So what should we learn? If we get lost, should we also follow a river?
zh:他的家人从四川开了50多个小时过来，来了十多个亲戚。我理解那些眼泪。那我们能学到什么？迷路了也要沿着河走吗？
[Mike]: Rescue workers say no, not always. In that forest, rivers do not always lead to roads. The best way is to stay where you are and wait for rescue. If you have fire, make smoke in an open place. If you must move, leave marks on trees.
zh:救援人员说，不一定。在那片林区，沿河不一定能找到路。最好的办法是尽量待在原地等待救援。如果有火，就在空地上点烟。如果必须走，就在树上留记号。
[Sarah]: Stay put, make smoke, leave marks. Simple words, but they can save a life. You know what touches me most? He went in for pine cones, but lived because he dropped them.
