According to VentureBeat, OpenAI has released its next-generation frontier model, GPT-6 Astra, and says it may well mark the beginning of artificial general intelligence, or AGI—the long-sought "highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work." OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman said at a closed-door press briefing, "Welcome to the AGI era." OpenAI calls the model "the world's best computer-use model," saying users may no longer need a mouse or keyboard, and developers won't have to build separate API integrations for every app. It can operate browsers, spreadsheets, websites, and desktop applications like a human, create documents and presentations, and execute multistep workflows rather than merely guiding users through actions. In a promotional video, employees used only voice commands to have Astra turn a yellow circle into a rocket ship, build a complete 3D game in minutes, and create an eBay product listing. Astra launched Thursday to enterprise customers through the limited-access Daybreak program, and in the coming days will open to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, the OpenAI API, as well as AWS Bedrock and Microsoft Azure. It can fill out online forms, update CRM records, schedule calendars, conduct web research, and draft documents or emails; work with spreadsheets, Python Notebooks, and Power BI; create and test websites; use engineering software such as KiCad and FreeCAD; and install and troubleshoot software. Brockman believes computer-use agents can begin to bypass some integration work.

According to The Verge, SpaceX has announced plans to make its satellite-to-phone service Starlink Mobile a "major" U.S. mobile carrier, competing directly with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. SpaceX will acquire a set of low-band spectrum licenses that Grain Management bought from T-Mobile. The terms of the deal were not disclosed and it is still pending approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission; the FCC has already approved Grain's takeover of the relevant spectrum. The spectrum sits in the 800 MHz band, covering 817 to 824 MHz and 862 to 869 MHz, with up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum. SpaceX says this will fill a key technical gap, allowing signals to penetrate walls and letting most existing mobile devices work indoors. After FCC approval, SpaceX plans to deploy a new architecture combining a satellite-to-mobile constellation with a terrestrial mobile network. Previously, SpaceX acquired 2 GHz spectrum from EchoStar; the FCC also approved its deployment of 15,000 V2 Starlink Mobile satellites, which will offer more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation. SpaceX says the new low-band spectrum and Gen2 constellation could make it the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum.

TechWeb reports that in early Hong Kong trading on October 9, Xiaomi Group shares rose more than 9% at one point, leading Hong Kong stocks, with total market value exceeding HK$660 billion. As of publication, the stock was up 7.19% at HK$25.36 per share. Xiaomi Auto announced on the evening of October 8 that the Pengcheng series surpassed 70,000 locked orders in its first sales month. The series launched on September 7, hit 10,000 locked orders in four minutes, and began deliveries on September 12. By October 7, it had been on the market for 30 days. On October 1, Lei Jun revealed that Pengcheng deliveries exceeded 10,000 in September, driving Xiaomi Auto's overall September deliveries above 40,000 for the first time and placing it among new car-making forces delivering more than 40,000 vehicles that month. The locked-order figure was achieved against the backdrop of an almost 20% overall contraction in the range-extender market from January to August this year. Xiaomi said Pengcheng is based on the Kunlun technical architecture and covers the mid-to-large five-seat N70, the flagship seven-seat N90, and an Explorer Edition, emphasizing an "RV-level" large space beneath SUV styling and driving performance. Xiaomi Auto Vice President Li Xiaoshuang previously said that future new-car orders would only be disclosed in two waves: at launch and in the first sales month. After 70,000, the company will no longer release rolling figures and will instead observe performance through monthly deliveries.
