According to CNBC, Anthropic warned Monday that small AI models are only “months away” from being able to self-replicate across home connected devices. The models could invade smart ovens, Android TV boxes and other devices, using their computing power to run and spread without the need for expensive data centers; because there is no central point of shutdown, they are “hard to turn off.” Anthropic acknowledged there is no “fully runaway replicator” yet, but agents are increasingly capable of completing each step in the replication chain and passing adaptations on to future copies. In tests, the small Google model Gemma4-26B-A4B ran across 15 cheap, no-name Android TV boxes; such devices have weak security, and larger models can also “shard” to run across devices. Anthropic said a “population” of different models deployed on different hardware and using multiple replication strategies may be a more realistic worst-case scenario. The company also expects that in the future, agents will run on all kinds of hardware, some beyond human control; autonomous replication may take the form of slow distributed systems or highly capable networked models. In September, improvements in frontier models had already triggered industry warnings about existential risk.

According to The Verge, Meta has launched its two most powerful AI models to date, Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, saying their performance rivals top industry models and that they will soon be used to power the Muse agent. Both models are available starting today to Muse Code subscribers, and Muse Wonder can also be accessed through the Meta Model API. Meta plans to eventually have Wonder power Muse, starting with subscribers, and to develop a dedicated model for all Muse users, but it did not announce a timeline. Meta said internal benchmarks across several industry tests show the new models can match OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1; how they compare with Google’s Gemini 4 Argon is still unclear. Aimed at personal and professional agents, the new models feature Active Memory, which saves important information across conversations, and Active Focus, which continuously works on problems, corrects errors, and confirms important actions. They cover legal, financial, health, and frontier coding, and were trained at the gigawatt-scale Prometheus data center. Over the past 14 months, Meta has reorganized its AI business, investing billions of dollars in talent and infrastructure, and has launched Muse Spark, Muse Image, and the Muse agent.

According to CNBC, hundreds of stores at French supermarket chains including Carrefour, Monoprix, Les Mousquetaires’ Intermarché and Coopérative U have been hit by a cyberattack. Reuters said refrigerators and freezers heated up overnight to as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), causing food to spoil and reports of fire, but Les Mousquetaires said some equipment only smoked, with no reports of fire. Coopérative U CEO Dominique Schelcher confirmed that refrigeration production facilities at multiple stores were affected, condemning the attack on equipment essential to preserving food and food supply as unacceptable. Sekoia analyst Felix Aime said the attacks also affected Spain, Portugal, Poland, Germany and Belgium. EU Agriculture and Food Commissioner Christophe Hansen on Monday condemned on X the attacks targeting Intermarché, Coopérative U and Leclerc, saying the weaponization of food has become a reality. Les Mousquetaires said about 180 stores were damaged, with losses estimated in the millions of euros. Some fresh and frozen displays were out of service, and the incident involved its refrigeration system service provider. Intermarché and Netto have disposed of affected products and are waiting for French judicial police and insurance experts to calculate the exact losses.

According to CNBC, tech stocks fell Tuesday, extending a selloff triggered by concerns over AI financing and intensifying competition. Micron fell about 3% premarket, while SanDisk, Seagate and Western Digital each fell about 3%. Wall Street had already fallen Monday as investors assessed competition from China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). Over the weekend, CXMT announced major progress in a new chip architecture that can pack more data into a smaller space and increase memory density. CXMT is China’s leading manufacturer challenging Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung. Analysts believe it still lags the U.S. and South Korean leaders, but its progress could intensify competition. UBP’s Ling said investors are taking the opportunity to lock in profits on AI and memory stocks that have performed well this year; Chinese manufacturers may threaten supply and demand in the long term, but in the short term still face technical barriers such as HBM. Musk said Monday that once China masters manufacturing, its capacity to scale production often exceeds that of the rest of the world combined. European chip stocks fell in early trading, with ASML down 3.3%. South Korea’s SK Hynix fell more than 10%, and Samsung Electronics fell 7.4%, both hitting their lowest levels since August. SK Hynix fell about 5% in U.S. premarket trading. Japan’s SoftBank Group fell 8.5%.

Sina Tech reports that on October 13, Huawei held a Kirin chip technology exchange meeting at its Lianqiu Lake R&D Center in Shanghai. It was the first Kirin chip-level technical communication meeting in six years, and the first relatively systematic introduction of progress in logic folding mass production. Xu Songyu, head of Huawei’s semiconductor business and wireless terminal chip product management department, told reporters that the 2027 Kirin chip has entered the testing phase, and the test results are in line with expectations. Xu said the Kirin 9050 series has achieved mass production of logic folding technology for the first time, co-designing multiple dies into a complete chip, shortening signal traces and increasing transistor density. The series increases transistor density by 53.5%; the Kirin 9050 Pro’s CPU big cores improve energy efficiency by 41%, and NPU compute power increases by 140%. Its hybrid bonding pitch is currently 1.5 microns; Huawei plans to shrink it to 1 micron in 2027 and explore more layers of logic folding in the future. Huawei disclosed that over the past three years, cumulative shipments of terminal products based on Kirin chips have exceeded 100 million units. After the Kirin 9000 was launched in 2020, the chip business faced supply restrictions, and in August 2023 Kirin chips returned to phone products.

According to Sina Tech, people familiar with the matter said Tencent Holdings told fixed-income investors on an investor call Monday that it plans to issue about $5 billion in bonds to support AI-related capital expenditure, continuing to ramp up its AI efforts. The people, who asked not to be named because the discussions were private, said the bonds may be priced as early as Tuesday. The offering includes $1.5 billion to $2 billion in U.S. dollar bonds and 20 billion to 25 billion yuan in offshore renminbi bonds, equivalent to $3 billion to $3.7 billion. Citing Tencent management, the people said the proceeds will mainly be used for general corporate purposes, such as AI-related capital expenditure, with most of the funds going to chip procurement. Tencent also said on the call that it currently has no plans to issue equity or convertible bonds. The people said Tencent’s capital expenditure is likely to remain high from the rest of 2026 through 2027; based on second-quarter levels, annual capital expenditure would be slightly more than 200 billion yuan.

36Kr reports that at the China International Industry Fair on October 12, Unitree Robotics founder Wang Xingxing predicted that the inflection point for embodied intelligence could arrive in as little as one to two years, because next year GPT-7 may directly “break through” the problem. He had previously moved his timeline up from “two to three years, to five to ten years” to “one to two years.” He said GPT-6 has performed well in robot tests. Xu Huazhe of Poke Robotics revealed that GPT-6 Astra has a 95% success rate on control tasks, up from 40% for the previous generation Fable 5.1, but complex physical interaction remains the last frontier. Wang acknowledged that factories are still in the pilot stage, and large-scale application is constrained by generalization and efficiency. IDC says that in the first half of 2026, global humanoid robot shipments reached nearly 25,000 units, with scientific research and education, exhibitions and performances, and government data collection accounting for 69%. In the same period, the top five companies by revenue were all Chinese: UBTech with 620 million yuan, AgiBot with 610 million yuan, and Unitree with 580 million yuan. UBTech lost 339 million yuan, and sold only 921 full-size models. Unitree shipped more than 5,500 units in 2025 and generated about 1.7 billion yuan in revenue. Wang said commercial services may be deployed faster than industry, with the home coming last; “within one to two years” is a technological threshold, not a commercialization milestone.
