00:09 Intro

Kia ora! Welcome back to the 'Kiwi English Booster'. This is Episode 33, and today we are hopping on public transport in New Zealand. Whether you are taking the bus in Auckland or the train in Wellington, knowing the right words will make your journey much smoother. Let's listen to the conversation.

00:33 Conversation

Passenger: Morning, driver!

Driver: Kia ora! How's it going?

Passenger: Excuse me, does this bus go to the city centre?

Driver: Yeah, mate. Just remember to tag on and tag off with your AT HOP card.

Passenger: Oh, I think my card is empty. Can I top up here?

Driver: Sorry mate, we don't do cash top-ups on board anymore. But you can just tap your credit card or phone now.

Passenger: Oh, sweet! I'll just tap my phone then.

Driver: Easy as. Just make sure you tag off with the same phone when you leave.

(At the end of the trip)

Passenger: Cheers, driver!

01:18 Explains

That was a classic bus ride in New Zealand! Let's break down some vocabulary. First, Tag on and tag off. Spelled T-A-G, space, O-N, and T-A-G, space, O-F-F. This means tapping your transport card or phone on the reader when you get on and off the bus or train. Second, AT HOP card. Spelled A-T, space, H-O-P. This is the transport card used in Auckland. In Wellington, they use a Snapper card. Third, Top up. Spelled T-O-P, space, U-P. This means adding money to your card. Just remember, you can't top up on the bus anymore! Finally, Cheers, driver. Spelled C-H-E-E-R-S. It's a very common Kiwi tradition to shout 'Cheers, driver!' or 'Thank you, driver!' when you get off the bus from the back door. Now let's hear how it sounds in a real environment with a natural, faster pace.
