[Sarah]: Welcome back to Learn English with Podcasts. Today I want to tell you a story. Imagine you are on the vacation of a lifetime, in one of the most famous parks in the world. You leave your dog in a cabin for two hours. When you come back, she is gone.

zh:欢迎回到 Learn English with Podcasts。

[Sarah]: That is what happened to a family from California this September. Their dog is named Luna. She is a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier, a small white dog with pointy ears and a gray collar.

[Sarah]: The place was Yellowstone National Park. It was the first national park in the United States. It covers about 3,500 square miles, across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.

[Sarah]: Yellowstone is beautiful, but it is also wild. It is home to grizzly bears, wolves, and coyotes. For a small dog, being alone there is very dangerous.

[Sarah]: Luna escaped on September 10. Her family left her in a cabin at Canyon Village with a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. Then they went to see a geyser.

[Sarah]: But a housekeeper opened the door anyway. Luna ran out. The staff tried to catch her, and they chased her around the area for more than two hours.

[Sarah]: When the family came back, Luna was gone. They searched, but rangers told them the truth. A small dog would probably not survive the cold or the coyotes.

[Sarah]: The family went home without her. A few days later, they heard something surprising. People had seen Luna. She was still alive.

[Sarah]: They contacted Katie Boucher. She is a volunteer and the president of Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center in Montana. She decided to help.

[Sarah]: There is one more thing about Luna. Before she was adopted, she spent her first year living on the streets. She knew how to survive.

[Sarah]: For weeks, people saw her around the park. She crossed roads. She walked through employee housing. She even walked into lodges through the automatic doors.

[Sarah]: And this is the strange part. Luna was retracing her family's steps. She went back to the eateries and lodges they had visited the day before she was lost.

[Sarah]: So why was she so hard to catch? Because people kept calling her name and chasing her. That made her afraid, and she ran deeper into the park.

[Sarah]: There was another problem. Rescuers could not use food in the trap. Food would attract bears and wolves, the very animals Luna was trying to avoid.

[Sarah]: Winter was also coming. The campground and roads were going to close on Monday. Boucher knew this was her last week to search.

[Sarah]: So they built a live trap. It was a doghouse with a bed of straw and grass. It would hold Luna without hurting her. And instead of food, they used scraps from a T-shirt and a pillowcase from her family.

[Sarah]: On Tuesday, a park employee saw Luna circling the trap. She lay down near it. She was thinking about it.

[Sarah]: On Wednesday morning, at 9 a.m., they found her inside. Luna had survived 35 days in the wild.

[Sarah]: They took her to a veterinarian. She was underweight, but she was alert and in good spirits. Her owner held her during the exam. Boucher said she cried all the way from the park.

[Sarah]: They never used food. They used the smell of home. After 35 days in the wild, Luna walked toward the smell of her family.

[Sarah]: That is the story for today. If you have a dog, give her an extra hug. And thank you for listening. See you in the next episode.
