Mechanic: Hi there. We've finished looking at your car, but unfortunately, it failed its WOF.
Car Owner: Oh no, really? What’s the issue?
Mechanic: Your front brake pads are completely worn out, and you have a bald tyre on the back left.
Car Owner: Right. Can you fix it here? And could you give me a quote for the repairs?
Mechanic: Yeah, absolutely. We can replace the brake pads and fit a new tyre. The quote is about three hundred bucks including labour.
Car Owner: Okay, that sounds fair. Please go ahead and fix it.
Mechanic: Sweet as. We'll have it sorted by this afternoon.
01:31 Explains
That was a very practical conversation! Let's break down some vocabulary. First, Mechanic. Spelled M-E-C-H-A-N-I-C. This is the person or the garage that repairs cars and issues your WOF. Second, Fail a WOF. Spelled F-A-I-L. If your car doesn't pass the safety inspection, you fail the WOF and must fix the issues before you can drive it legally. Third, Worn brake pads. Spelled W-O-R-N, space, B-R-A-K-E, space, P-A-D-S. This means your brakes are too thin and need replacing. Finally, Quote. Spelled Q-U-O-T-E. This is an estimated price for the repairs before you agree to have the work done. Now let's hear how it sounds in a real environment with a natural, faster pace.
