Today, Duoji is telling you about The Myth of Sisyphus, by Albert Camus

A man pushes a huge rock up a mountain

It rolls down

He walks down and pushes again

The gods gave him this punishment, and it never ends

Yet Camus asks us to imagine that this man is happy

Watch the walk down

A moment ago his cheek was on the stone, his shoulder under the weight, his muddy hands pushing it up inch by inch

Then the long effort ended, and the rock rolled back down

Now he walks toward it, heavy and even, knowing what comes

If he still believed one more push would keep the rock on top, his pain would have a hope

But Sisyphus knows there's no such push

He sees it clearly, nothing hidden

Camus stops and looks at this man

The same clarity can come on an ordinary day

Get up, take the bus, work, eat, work again, sleep

Monday passes, Tuesday follows, and one day a person asks, why

What he did without thinking yesterday now needs an explanation

Tomorrow he'll still get up and work, but where is it going

He wants his labor to mean something, his scattered life to be one whole he understands

The world won't answer

The man who asks and the world that stays silent face each other

Camus calls that clash the absurd

A sharper question follows

If you can't find the meaning of life, is life not worth living

He asks about that step

Is there a necessary link between "I can't explain life" and "I must end it"

His answer is no

Ending a life removes the asker, and the clash goes too

But it doesn't say how to face the world

Others leap past reason into faith and hand the unknown to eternity

Camus refuses that too

He won't pretend he has an answer he doesn't

He wants to live inside the question

The asking stays, the silence stays

Neither is erased

Every day he faces the clash again

That is revolt

On the hillside, Sisyphus is still walking down

This mountain wasn't always all he knew

In one legend, before he died, he told his wife not to bury him, to test her love

She obeyed

In the underworld he asked to go back and punish her

He was allowed to return

Once he tasted water, saw the sun, the warm stones and the sea, he didn't want to return

He lived on earth for years and wouldn't leave, despite the calls and warnings

So the messenger of the gods dragged him back

The rock was waiting

He had loved the earth

Now its happiness is a memory, and he must walk back to the rock

The road down hurts

Camus doesn't wipe that away

What he lost can turn so vivid it's hard to bear

Clarity alone doesn't make anyone happy

But Camus saw something else

Sisyphus saw the whole fate the gods gave him and kept no last hope for them

He can despise this judgment

It is still carried out

His contempt stays

He bears the work without agreeing they're right

This revolt brings no pardon

The rock will fall again

Where is freedom left

Camus looks at the life a person really lives

Death makes eternal freedom impossible

It shows how much of today he held back for tomorrow

That tomorrow is gone, and what can be felt and done now becomes urgent

An actor knows the curtain will fall, and still lives a character's love and pain on stage

A creator knows the work may be destroyed, and still shapes it

Neither solves the absurd

Both keep giving themselves to life

That's the freedom and passion Camus finds

Life is limited, and you feel it as fully as you can

Back to Sisyphus

The summit isn't closer, the punishment isn't shorter

But when he looks back, his actions, his memories, his labor join into a life that is his own

The judgment of the gods can't speak it for him

Here happiness becomes possible

It sits with the pain, with the revolt, with work that has no end

So Camus says, we must imagine Sisyphus happy

He leaves Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain

The rock is still there

Every grain on it, every fleck of mineral on that dark peak, makes a world
