🎧 Show Notes
In 1999, an American teacher helped a Chinese farmer buy saplings. They lost contact. In 2026, she asked the internet to help her find him.
In 1999, Ronald "Saikos" Sakolsky was teaching in Luoyang when he saw a television report about a Chinese farmer planting trees in the Maowusu Sandy Land. He contacted more than a dozen American organizations until a Boston-based charity sent Yin Yuzhen five thousand dollars. She kept one banknote as a memento. She bought saplings.
Then they lost contact for twenty-six years.
In May 2026, Yin posted a video asking the internet to help find him. Twenty-six hours later, he was found. In August, he walked down an escalator at Ordos airport holding flowers, crying before he reached the bottom. The next day they planted three Mongolian Scots pines. He filled a jar with sand. "This is not ordinary sand," he said. "This is love."
On October 15th, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization named Yin one of its 100 Women Heroes — the final honoree announced at the ceremony. A week earlier, in Rome, she had given him a pair of cloth shoes.
This episode is not only about them. It's about what their story exposes in the rest of us: Mark, who stayed in Chengdu for twelve years without ever truly arriving; Tom, rehearsing a return at seventy; and Old Wang's bamboo chair — because a chair is for sitting, and if you keep it empty, it stops being a chair and becomes "a plaque, a chair that has failed."
Three threads, three tools: the ledger of what actually happened; friendship latency — why a delayed relationship is not a dead one; and the legacy tax — what you pay when you return and discover what your presence actually left behind. Plus ten practical rules for being a long-term person, including: send the boring update, and accept the new person in the chair.
A forest does not replace a treaty. A treaty does not replace a forest. This is the quieter layer underneath.

❤️ Core Ideas
A delayed relationship is not a dead one — if the original act was real, someone tended the result, and both sides answer as participants, not tourists.
Three layers of presence 在场的三层:physical(身体在场)→ participatory(参与在场)→ generative(生成在场:你走后仍有东西继续)。The question is not where your body is, but what continues because you were there.
Four taxes 四种税:departure tax, return tax, staying tax, and tonight's new one — the legacy tax: you choose what you tend; you do not choose what remains.
Continuity is practice, not memory A tree doesn't recall last year's rain; it turns rain into wood.

Public reporting through October 22nd, 2026: Xinhua (Aug–Oct 2026), SCIO, China's Foreign Ministry briefing of Sept 2nd, and FAO's Oct 15th announcement (609 nominations from 131 Members; nearly 5,000 hectares restored; 8 million+ trees planted — cumulative figures, not a census of survivors). The episode explains the 27/26-year count: 27 years from the 1999 gift, 26 from the 2000 meeting.
