Today, Duoji brings you Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.
This 2001 Newbery Honor Book begins with a stray dog and a question a child finds hard to ask.
Her mother has been gone for years. What can Opal ask her father about her?
Over the summer, the dog will not bring her mother back. But he will lead her to many other people.
Ten-year-old Opal has moved to Naomi, Florida, with her father, a preacher.
Opal was three when her mother left, and her memories of her mother are fading.
She has no friends in town. Her father rarely mentions her mother, and they both avoid the subject.
One day, Opal goes shopping at a Winn-Dixie supermarket and finds a big dog causing trouble.
The dog is dirty and thin. The manager wants to send him to the pound.
Opal quickly claims him as her own. But to call him over, she needs a name.
She calls him Winn-Dixie, borrowing the store’s name. The dog actually follows her.
Back home, she pleads with her father until he agrees to let the dog stay.
While washing and brushing Winn-Dixie, Opal tells him about her life.
He has no mother with him, and neither does she. She decides to ask her father the questions she has been keeping to herself.
She asks for ten things about her mother—one for each year of her own life.
Her father says her mother loved growing things, listening to stories, and telling them. She had a lovely laugh.
But she did not like being a preacher’s wife, and she drank too much.
Her father does not hide the painful details. He also tells Opal that her mother loved her very much.
Opal remembers every detail. Her mother is still gone, but now Opal has a clearer picture of her.
Winn-Dixie cannot bear to be alone, so Opal takes him wherever she goes.
At the library, the big dog frightens Miss Franny Block. She thinks a bear that once wandered in when she was young has returned.
After telling the funny story, she says that everyone she knew back then has died.
Opal offers to be her new friend. Winn-Dixie can be her friend too.
Opal also wants a collar and leash for Winn-Dixie. At the pet store, she arranges to pay for them by cleaning the shop.
Otis, who works there, finds it hard to talk to people. But he can play the guitar.
One morning, she arrives early and finds the animals out of their cages, quietly listening to Otis play.
Otis admits he let them out. He has been in jail and knows how it feels to be locked up.
Opal is not sure whether she should be afraid of him.
Two brothers in town, Dunlap and Stevie, tell her that Gloria Dump is a witch.
But when Winn-Dixie runs into Gloria’s yard and Opal follows, she finds an older woman with poor eyesight feeding him peanut butter.
Gloria cannot see Opal clearly, so she asks her to talk about herself. Opal talks about home and the town, and Gloria listens.
Later, Opal asks about Otis’s past. Gloria shows her a tree covered with empty bottles.
Gloria drank the alcohol that was in those bottles. She keeps them to remind herself of her mistakes.
She asks Opal to notice how people treat others now, rather than judging them only by their past. Opal thinks of Otis, and of her mother.
At Miss Franny’s, Opal tries a Littmus Lozenge, a candy with sadness tucked into its sweetness.
The same candy brings back different sorrows for each person. Opal misses her mother. The others have their own losses too.
Opal decides to hold a party at Gloria’s house and bring these friends together.
Gloria agrees, but wants Dunlap and Stevie invited too. Opal is reluctant, but she agrees.
Miss Franny and a little girl called Sweetie Pie receive invitations. Otis, however, is afraid of being around so many people.
Opal keeps asking and offers to do extra work. At last, he agrees to come with his guitar.
After the party begins, a thunderstorm breaks out. Everyone hurries to carry the food indoors.
Then Opal remembers Winn-Dixie. Thunder sends him running in a panic, and now he is missing.
She and her father go out into the rain, searching one place after another.
When her father says it is time to go back, Opal’s years of hurt come pouring out.
Why will he not keep looking? Did he give up like this when her mother left?
Her father cries. He wanted her mother to stay too, but he could not make her stay.
Her mother will not be coming back, but she left him with Opal. At last, Opal sees that her father has been hurting too.
Back at Gloria’s house, they learn that Winn-Dixie had hidden under a bed.
While Otis was playing his guitar, Winn-Dixie had sneezed and given away his hiding place.
The dog is safe, the friends are still there, and the party goes on.
Opal goes into the yard alone and silently tells her mother about the summer.
She still misses her mother. But now she has her father to talk to and friends to visit.
Dunlap offers his hand, and this time she does not pull away. Then Opal walks back toward the lighted house. The singing is still going on.
