[Mike]: Welcome back to Learn English with Podcasts. Sarah, I have a question for you. If the police lock you in a jail cell, and that jail cell saves your life, is the police officer your friend?

zh:欢迎回到 Learn English with Podcasts。

[Sarah]: That sounds like a riddle. What are you talking about?

[Mike]: I'm talking about a man who survived the worst volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. Not because he was lucky. Because he was locked up.

[Sarah]: Okay, now I'm listening. Where was this?

[Mike]: A small island in the Caribbean. Martinique. It belonged to France at the time. The town was called Saint-Pierre, and it sat at the foot of a volcano called Mount Pelée.

[Sarah]: What was the town like before this happened?

[Mike]: People called it the Paris of the West Indies. It had a theatre, electric streetcars, and a big harbour. Around 28,000 people lived there.

[Sarah]: That sounds beautiful. And dangerous, if it sits under a volcano.

[Mike]: The mountain had been quiet for a very long time. Then, in April 1902, it woke up.

[Sarah]: What did people see?

[Mike]: First, small earthquakes. Then ash. Fine grey dust fell on the town almost every day. On May 5, a river of mud and rock came down the mountain and destroyed a sugar factory. Dozens of workers died.

[Sarah]: That is a serious warning. So people started to leave?

[Mike]: Some did. Many did not. And this is the part that makes me angry.

[Sarah]: Go on.

zh:继续说。

[Mike]: There was an election on May 11. The governor, Louis Mouttet, did not want panic. A group of scientists told him the volcano was not an immediate danger. So he told people to stay calm.

[Sarah]: Did he believe it?

[Mike]: He believed it enough to stay in the city himself. With his wife. They both died on May 8.

[Sarah]: So he wasn't lying to them. He was just wrong.

[Mike]: Yes. And being wrong was enough.

[Sarah]: Alright. So where does the prisoner come in?

[Mike]: His name was Ludger Sylbaris. He was also known as Louis-Auguste Cyparis. He was a sailor and a farm worker, and he had a lot of trouble with the police.

[Sarah]: What kind of trouble?

[Mike]: On May 2, he was arrested for stabbing a man in a fight. Then, on the night of May 7, he left the prison without permission. He went to a party in town and came back the next morning.

[Sarah]: He went to a party? Six days before all of this?

[Mike]: He didn't know what was coming. Nobody did. But that night out had a price. As punishment, the guards put him alone in a special cell. Eight days.

[Sarah]: That sounds like the worst place to be. A tiny cell, in that heat.

[Mike]: It sounds like it. But this was no normal cell. It was built half underground. The stone walls were about a metre thick. There was no window at all. The only air came through a narrow slit in the door.

[Sarah]: And the door faced...

[Mike]: Away from the volcano. It faced north. The mountain was to the south.

[Sarah]: Wait. So he was sitting in a stone box, with one small hole, and the hole was on the safe side.

[Mike]: Exactly. It was probably the safest room in the whole city. And he was in it because he broke the rules.

[Sarah]: So what happened at eight in the morning?

[Mike]: The mountain opened. A cloud of black ash and burning gas shot out of the side of Mount Pelée and came down the slope. It moved faster than a car on a highway. It reached the city in about a minute.

[Sarah]: One minute.

zh:一分钟。

[Mike]: In that minute, Saint-Pierre stopped existing. The air was hundreds of degrees hot. Wood, cloth, rum, people — everything burned. Almost 28,000 people died.

[Sarah]: And the man in the cell?

[Mike]: He said the light went out. It became completely dark. Then hot air and fine ash pushed through the slit in the door. It burned his face, his hands, his legs, his back.

[Sarah]: What did he do?

[Mike]: He took off his clothes, wet them, and pushed them into the gap. It didn't stop the heat. But it slowed it down.

[Sarah]: He was still thinking. In the dark, with his skin burning, he was still thinking.

[Mike]: That's the part I keep coming back to. He didn't only survive. He fought for it, with the only tools he had.

[Sarah]: How long was he in there?

[Mike]: Four days. No food. No water. The city around him was gone. On May 12, a rescue team heard someone shouting from the ruins.

[Sarah]: He was still shouting.

[Mike]: He was still shouting.

[Sarah]: Were there other survivors?

[Mike]: A few. Accounts differ on the number. There was a shoemaker, Léon Compère-Léandre, who lived at the edge of the city. He was badly burned, but he lived. And there was a young girl, Havivra Da Ifrile, who is said to have escaped by boat. Her story is less well documented.

[Sarah]: So he wasn't the only one. But he was the one inside the city.

[Mike]: The only one inside a stone building in the middle of it. By one account, sixty or seventy other prisoners died in that same jail.

[Sarah]: That's a hard number to hear.

[Mike]: Yes.

zh:是的。

[Sarah]: What happened to him after?

[Mike]: He was pardoned. He recovered, though his body stayed marked. And then he became famous.

[Sarah]: Famous how?

[Mike]: Barnum and Bailey's circus hired him. He toured the United States. He sat in a copy of his cell, showed his scars, and told his story. He became one of the most famous circus acts of that time.

[Sarah]: That's a strange job. Showing the worst day of your life, every night.

[Mike]: It paid. But it didn't last. He got into fights. He was arrested several times in New York. In the end, he was sent out of the country. He died in Panama in 1929.

[Sarah]: So the cell saved him, and then life went on being life.

[Mike]: That's one way to say it. The director Werner Herzog talked about him in a 1977 documentary. He said Sylbaris survived because he was the baddest guy in town.

[Sarah]: The baddest guy in town.

[Mike]: That's why he was in the deepest cell. The guards were trying to make his life harder. They put him in the safest place in Saint-Pierre.

[Sarah]: Is the cell still there?

[Mike]: It's still there. You can visit it. A small stone box, half in the ground, at the edge of a town that never came back.

[Sarah]: I keep thinking about that door. One small slit, facing the wrong way for the volcano. If it had faced south...

[Mike]: Then we would have no story. Just another name on a very long list.

[Sarah]: If you could ask him one question, what would it be?

[Mike]: I'd ask what he thought about, in those four days in the dark. But I don't think he would tell me the truth. I think he would tell me the circus version.

[Sarah]: That's a sad answer.

[Mike]: It's an honest one.

[Mike]: Listeners, we want to hear from you. If you know a story like this one — a person saved by the worst thing that ever happened to them — tell us. We might talk about it in a future episode.

[Sarah]: Thanks for listening to Learn English with Podcasts. See you in the next episode.
