Flipped.
Flipped。 Today, Duoji is telling the story of Flipped, by Wendelin Van Draanen.
Juli had liked the boy next door for years. She had dreamed of holding his hand, and of a kiss. But when Bryce finally tried to kiss her, she pulled away and ran. After watching him all those years, what had she failed to see?
It began on the day he moved in.
The moving truck had barely stopped when Juli came over to help. Bryce tried to get away, but she kept coming closer. She saw his blue eyes and thought he was wonderful. He saw a little girl he could not get rid of, and just wanted to shut the door.
For years, they kept missing each other like this. Juli looked for chances to talk to him. Bryce looked for ways to escape. She took his attempts to avoid her as shyness. He felt she was always embarrassing him in front of his classmates.
But there were things in Juli's life that fascinated her even more than Bryce.
A tall sycamore tree stood nearby. She loved climbing it and looking down at the familiar streets and rooftops. Up there, she could see so far.
She wanted Bryce to come up and see it too, but he always stayed below.
One morning, workers arrived with tools to cut the tree down. Juli stayed in its branches and refused to come down. She called to the children heading for the school bus, asking for help.
She hoped someone would stay, especially Bryce. He got on the bus anyway.
In the end, her father came for her. She came down, and the tree was cut down. Later, her father painted a picture of it. Juli could look at the painting and remember her tree, but she could never sit among its branches again.
Bryce knew she was upset and had thought about comforting her, but he said nothing. Juli could not hear the words he never spoke. She only remembered that when she asked for help, he had left.
She did not yet know that the eggs she brought his family kept ending up in the trash too.
She had raised those hens with care. When there were more eggs than her family needed, she sold some to the neighbors. The eggs she brought Bryce's family were the only ones she gave away for free.
Each visit meant seeing him, and sharing something she had worked hard to produce.
But Bryce's family thought her yard was a mess and worried that the eggs might not be safe to eat. His father told him to stop accepting them. Afraid of hurting her feelings, and of getting into trouble, Bryce took the eggs and secretly threw them away. Carton after carton, Juli had no idea.
Then she caught him throwing them away. Bryce explained that it was because of her dirty, messy yard. Only then did Juli understand: the eggs she had been so happy to bring had never even reached his family's table.
She stopped bringing eggs. And for the first time, she felt ashamed of her yard.
Gradually, she learned more about why it looked that way. Her family rented their home. Her parents worked hard to make ends meet, and her father also paid for Uncle David's care. David had an intellectual disability and lived in a place where staff could look after him.
Her father did not have much money, but he had never stopped caring for his brother.
Juli began fixing up the yard. Bryce's grandfather came over to help. As they cleared and planted, they talked about the tree that had been cut down.
Watching them, Bryce wondered how his grandfather could have so much to say to Juli.
His grandfather had noticed her long before. He had read about her fight to save the tree in the newspaper and admired her determination. Bryce looked at the article again.
Before, all he had worried about was Juli embarrassing him. Now, looking at her picture, he wanted to know more.
Only after she stopped bringing eggs did he learn how popular they were with the neighbors, and that people paid for them. She had always given his family theirs for free, and he had not even been willing to tell her he could not accept them.
Juli kept busy with her own work in the yard. He wanted to talk to her now, but did not know how to approach her.
On Uncle David's birthday, Juli went with her father to visit him. David was delighted with his new jigsaw puzzle.
When they went out for ice cream, he dropped his cone and began to cry and shout. Her father stayed with him, trying to calm him. Juli got another cone, and at last David settled down.
On the way home, her father talked about how hard it was to care for his brother, and how he sometimes felt he had failed. He envied Bryce's father, who seemed more successful.
But Juli told her dad that if she got married someday, she would want someone like him.
Not long afterward, she overheard Bryce and a friend talking about her uncle in the library. The friend made a cruel joke about David's disability. Bryce did not speak up to stop him.
She had just celebrated her uncle's birthday with him. She still remembered how patiently her father had calmed him. Bryce knew none of that, but he had not said a word in defense of the person being mocked.
She did not want to speak to him anymore. Yet on Friday, their families were supposed to have dinner together.
At Bryce's house, she told him she had heard everything in the library. Bryce regretted not stopping his friend. But when Juli heard those words, she had no way of knowing he regretted them.
During dinner, Bryce's father asked Juli's two brothers about their plans. They wanted to make music and had brought songs they had saved up to record. Bryce's sister played them for everyone.
After the guests left, his father suggested the boys had paid for the recording by selling drugs. His sister angrily challenged him. He slapped her across the face.
Bryce admired his sister for speaking up. He himself always seemed to regret his silence afterward. When people used to say he was like his father, he took it as a compliment. That night, the thought no longer made him happy.
He could not forget Juli just before she left, either. She had apologized for being angry when she arrived and touched his arm, leaving him dizzy.
But back at school, she was simply polite. She no longer followed him around. She still said hello, but it was as though she no longer needed him.
Then the school held a fundraiser. Selected boys would pack lunches, and other people would bid to share a meal with them. Bryce was chosen.
It still hurt Juli to hear that other girls planned to bid on him. She left her money at home so she would not be tempted to raise her hand for him after all.
But on her way to school, a neighbor paid her for some eggs. When Jon's turn came, nobody bid. Juli did not want this gentle boy to stand there feeling humiliated, so she offered the money she had just received.
Bryce saw her raise her hand and felt completely thrown. Did she like Jon now?
Two girls teamed up to win his lunch, but he kept watching Juli's table. The girls beside him were mocking another girl, and it made him uncomfortable. He looked over again. Juli was laughing and talking with Jon.
He left his seat, went over to Juli, and took her hand. Did she like Jon? She said no.
Then he tried to kiss her. Juli pulled away and hurried out of the cafeteria.
She went home and shut herself in her room. She had tried so hard to stop liking him, yet she still cared who ate lunch with him.
But when he suddenly leaned toward her, she had not wanted that either. Only when her mother asked did she tell her about the library and what had happened that day.
Bryce's friend teased him about Juli again. This time, Bryce told him to stop. If all his friend could do was mock the girl he liked, Bryce did not want to be his friend anymore.
Bryce went to see Juli, but she refused to see him. Her mother told him to give her some time.
She also reminded her daughter that people could change. Juli took that in, but when the phone rang again, she still did not want to answer.
A few days later, she found him digging in her front yard. The grass had only just begun to grow. She had worked so hard to plant it. But her father told her he had given Bryce permission to do something there.
She looked again and recognized the little tree he had brought.
It was a sycamore.
Juli watched him finish planting it. She did not yet know what to say to him, or what might happen between them.
But perhaps, the next time he knocked, she would be willing to listen. There was a little sycamore tree in her yard now.
