今天，多吉要讲的是罗尔德·达尔的《查理和巧克力工厂》。
Today, Duoji is going to tell you the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.
这座工厂里，巧克力流成河，连草地都能吃。可住在附近的查理，一年只能吃到一块巧克力。
Inside this factory, chocolate flows in a river, and even the grass is edible. But Charlie, who lives nearby, gets just one chocolate bar a year.
后来，他和另外四个孩子走进了工厂。参观还没结束，其他孩子就一个接一个地不见了。
One day, he enters the factory with four other children. Before the tour is over, the other children begin disappearing, one by one.
故事要从查理每年生日收到的那块巧克力说起。
Our story begins with the chocolate bar Charlie receives each year on his birthday.
他舍不得马上吃掉，总是先收起来，再一点点剥开包装。每天只咬一小口，一块巧克力能吃一个多月。
He cannot bear to eat it all at once, so he puts it away and unwraps it a little at a time. With just one tiny bite each day, he can make a single bar last more than a month.
查理一家七口挤在一间小木屋里，四位老人共睡一张床。
All seven members of Charlie's family live in a cramped little wooden house. His four grandparents share one bed.
爸爸在牙膏厂拧瓶盖，一家人常常只有面包、土豆和卷心菜汤可吃。
His father screws caps onto toothpaste tubes at a factory. Often, the family has only bread, potatoes, and cabbage soup to eat.
可查理每天上学都要经过旺卡的巧克力工厂，只能闻着空气中的香味往前走。
Yet every day on his way to school, Charlie has to pass Wonka's chocolate factory. He can only breathe in the sweet smell and keep walking.
乔爷爷告诉他，旺卡先生曾因间谍偷走配方而关闭工厂。
Grandpa Joe tells him that Mr. Wonka once closed the factory because spies had stolen his recipes.
后来，烟囱重新冒烟，大门却一直锁着，没人看见工人进出。
Later, smoke began rising from the chimneys again, but the gates stayed locked. No one ever saw any workers going in or out.
直到有一天，报纸登出消息：旺卡在五块巧克力里藏了金奖券。
Then, one day, an announcement appears in the newspaper. Wonka has hidden Golden Tickets in five chocolate bars.
找到奖券的人可以带家人参观工厂，还能得到够吃一辈子的糖果。
Anyone who finds a ticket can bring family members on a tour of the factory. Each winner will also receive a lifetime supply of sweets.
有人一箱箱地买巧克力。一个叫维鲁卡的女孩也想要奖券，她爸爸便让自己厂里的工人停下剥花生，改拆巧克力包装。
Some people buy chocolate by the box. When a girl named Veruca wants a ticket, her father has the workers at his factory stop shelling peanuts and start unwrapping chocolate bars instead.
查理只能等生日。那天，一家人围着他，看他拆开唯一的巧克力，里面却没有奖券。
Charlie can only wait for his birthday. When it arrives, his family gathers around as he unwraps his one chocolate bar, but there is no ticket inside.
后来，乔爷爷拿出偷偷攒下的一点钱，两人又试了一次，还是没有。
Later, Grandpa Joe brings out a little money he has secretly saved. They try again, but still find no ticket.
冬天越来越冷，爸爸工作的牙膏厂又倒闭了。一家人的饭更少了，查理走路也越来越慢。
The winter grows colder, and the toothpaste factory where his father works closes down. The family has even less food, and Charlie walks more and more slowly.
为了不因赶路耗尽力气，他尽量早点出门。就在这时，他在路边的积雪里发现了钱。
He tries to leave home early so that he will not waste his strength hurrying. Then, one day, he finds some money in the snow beside the road.
他走进商店，买了一块巧克力，很快吃完，又买了一块。
He goes into a shop, buys a chocolate bar, and gobbles it up. Then he buys another.
这一次，包装纸下露出了金色。最后一张金奖券，就在他手里。
This time, something gold appears beneath the wrapper. The very last Golden Ticket is in his hands.
人群立刻围了上来，有人出钱要买。店主帮他挡住人群，让他赶快回家。
A crowd quickly gathers, and someone offers to buy the ticket. The shopkeeper keeps the crowd back and tells Charlie to hurry home.
消息传回小木屋，卧床多年的乔爷爷激动得跳下了床。他要陪查理去参观。
When the news reaches the little wooden house, Grandpa Joe is so excited that he jumps out of bed after years of lying in it. He is going to accompany Charlie.
工厂大门终于打开，旺卡先生领着五个孩子和他们的家人走进去。
At last, the factory gates open. Mr. Wonka leads the five children and their families inside.
门后竟然是一座山谷，有草地、树木，还有一条巧克力河。
Beyond the door lies a valley, with grass, trees, and a river of chocolate.
一道瀑布不停搅打着巧克力，河岸边的小人忙个不停。
A waterfall churns the chocolate, while little people work busily along the riverbank.
他们是奥帕—伦帕人。旺卡请他们从伦帕国搬来，在这里生活、工作，并答应用他们最喜欢的可可豆支付报酬。
They are the Oompa-Loompas. Wonka invited them to leave Loompaland to live and work here, promising to pay them in their favourite food: cocoa beans.
那些从不走出大门的工人，原来就在这里。
So these are the workers no one ever sees leaving the factory.
旺卡让大家尝尝草地上的糖果，奥古斯塔斯却趴到河边，捧起巧克力就喝。
Wonka invites everyone to taste the sweets growing in the grass. But Augustus lies down at the river's edge and scoops up chocolate to drink.
旺卡叫他停下，他还是往前够，结果掉进河里，又被输送巧克力的管道吸了上去。
Wonka tells him to stop, but he keeps reaching forward. He falls into the river and is sucked up into a pipe that carries the chocolate away.
他先卡在透明管子里，接着又被冲走。妈妈急得大叫，旺卡却担心巧克力被弄脏，随后才派人带她去找孩子。
He gets stuck in the clear pipe before being swept away. His mother cries out in alarm, but Wonka worries about his chocolate getting dirty before sending someone to help her find her son.
参观继续。发明室里，一小片口香糖就能让人尝到一整顿饭。
The tour continues. In the Inventing Room, a tiny piece of chewing gum can give you the taste of an entire meal.
先是番茄汤，再是烤牛肉，最后是蓝莓派。
First comes tomato soup, then roast beef, and finally blueberry pie.
旺卡说这种口香糖还没研制成功，维奥莉特却已经抢过去嚼了起来。
Wonka says the gum is not ready yet, but Violet has already grabbed it and begun to chew.
嚼口香糖是她最得意的事，这种新发明，她当然要抢先试。
She takes great pride in her gum-chewing skills. Of course she wants to be the first to try this new invention.
可她刚尝到甜点，鼻子就变蓝了，身体越胀越大，最后变成一颗圆滚滚的大蓝莓。
But as soon as she tastes the dessert, her nose turns blue. Her body swells until she becomes a huge, round blueberry.
工人们把她滚走，赶去榨掉她身体里的果汁。
The workers roll her away to squeeze the juice out of her body.
到了坚果车间，维鲁卡看中了会剥核桃的松鼠。爸爸愿意出钱，旺卡却不肯卖。
In the Nut Room, Veruca sets her heart on one of the squirrels that shell walnuts. Her father offers to pay, but Wonka refuses to sell one.
她干脆闯进去，伸手就抓。松鼠们一拥而上，按住她，像检查核桃一样敲了敲她的脑袋。
So she rushes inside and reaches for a squirrel. The squirrels swarm around her, hold her down, and tap her head as if they were checking a walnut.
它们判定她是颗坏坚果，把她丢进垃圾滑道。旺卡说，滑道通往焚化炉，不过今天也许没有点火。
They decide she is a bad nut and throw her down the rubbish chute. Wonka says it leads to an incinerator, though it might not be lit today.
爸妈赶去探头寻找孩子，也被松鼠推了下去。
Her parents hurry over and peer down the chute to look for her. The squirrels push them down too.
查理紧紧跟着乔爷爷。现在，只剩下他和迈克两个孩子了。
Charlie stays close to Grandpa Joe. Now he and Mike are the only two children left.
在电视巧克力室，旺卡展示了一台能传送巨大巧克力的机器。
In the Television-Chocolate Room, Wonka demonstrates a machine that can transmit an enormous bar of chocolate.
巧克力传送后会缩小，出现在电视屏幕里，甚至能伸手拿出来吃。
The chocolate shrinks as it is transmitted and appears inside a television screen. You can even reach in, take it out, and eat it.
迈克一心想钻进电视。他不顾阻拦，冲进机器，把自己传送了过去。
Mike is determined to get inside the television. Ignoring every attempt to stop him, he rushes into the machine and transmits himself.
等妈妈把他从屏幕里拿出来时，他只有几厘米高。旺卡安排工人用拉伸口香糖的机器，把他重新拉长。
When his mother takes him out of the screen, he is only a few centimetres tall. Wonka sends him to the workers to be stretched back out in a machine used for stretching chewing gum.
这时，旺卡发现只剩下查理，便兴奋地宣布他赢了。可查理还不知道自己究竟赢得了什么。
Then Wonka notices that Charlie is the only child left and excitedly announces that he has won. But Charlie does not yet know what he has won.
旺卡领着查理和乔爷爷乘上玻璃升降机，冲破厂房屋顶，飞到城镇上空。
Wonka leads Charlie and Grandpa Joe into the glass lift. They burst through the factory roof and fly high above the town.
他们看见另外四个孩子都出来了：奥古斯塔斯瘦了，维奥莉特还是紫色。
They see that all four of the other children have come out. Augustus is thinner, and Violet is still purple.
维鲁卡一家沾满垃圾，迈克被拉得又高又细。每家都领到了旺卡答应给他们的糖果。
Veruca and her parents are covered in rubbish, and Mike has been stretched tall and thin. Each family has received the sweets Wonka promised them.
升降机再次升高，旺卡问查理是不是真的喜欢这座工厂。查理觉得，这是全世界最奇妙的地方。
The lift rises again, and Wonka asks Charlie if he really loves the factory. Charlie thinks it is the most wonderful place in the world.
旺卡这才告诉他，等他长大到能独立管理时，整座工厂都会属于他。
Only then does Wonka tell him that the whole factory will be his when he is old enough to run it himself.
查理和乔爷爷都愣住了。他只是来参观的，怎么连工厂都成了他的？
Charlie and Grandpa Joe are stunned. He only came for a visit, so how can the whole factory be his?
旺卡解释，他年纪大了，又没有孩子，需要有人接着管理工厂。
Wonka explains that he is getting old and has no children. He needs someone to take over the factory.
他不愿找一个事事按自己想法来的大人，而想找一个善良、懂事、有爱心，愿意向他学习的孩子。
He does not want a grown-up who will insist on doing everything their own way. He wants a kind, sensible, caring child who is willing to learn from him.
他要把制作糖果的秘密传给这个孩子。五张奖券，就是为了从受邀的孩子中选出他最喜欢的一个。
He wants to pass his sweet-making secrets on to that child. The five tickets were his way of finding his favourite among the children he invited.
查理担心妈妈不肯离开家里的老人。旺卡说，他们都可以搬来，连床也一起带走。
Charlie worries that his mother will not leave his grandparents behind. Wonka says they can all move in, and bring the bed along too.
在查理长大之前，全家都可以帮忙照管工厂。
Until Charlie grows up, the whole family can help look after the factory.
升降机飞向小木屋，撞穿屋顶，落进查理家里。一家人吓坏了。
The lift flies towards the little wooden house, crashes through its roof, and lands inside. The family is terrified.
查理和乔爷爷解释了好一阵，三位老人还是不肯坐升降机。
Charlie and Grandpa Joe spend quite some time explaining what has happened. Even then, the other three grandparents refuse to ride in the lift.
于是，旺卡、乔爷爷和查理把躺着他们的大床推进升降机，再让爸妈也进来。
So Wonka, Grandpa Joe, and Charlie push the big bed into the lift with the three grandparents still in it. Then they get Charlie's parents inside too.
一家人连同大床一起升上天空。查理爬到床上，安慰惊魂未定的老人。
The whole family, big bed and all, rises into the sky. Charlie climbs onto the bed and tries to calm his frightened grandparents.
乔奶奶还惦记着吃饭：到了那里，有没有东西吃？全家都饿着肚子。
Grandma Josephine is still thinking about food: will there be anything to eat when they arrive? The whole family is hungry.
查理笑了，让她等着瞧。升降机朝巧克力工厂飞去。
Charlie laughs and tells her to wait and see. The lift flies towards the chocolate factory.
工厂里还有许多奇妙的发明，奥帕—伦帕人也有自己的歌。
There are many more wonderful inventions in the factory, and the Oompa-Loompas have songs of their own.
