Most of all, I hope this podcast can be a companion to you." Guest: Dr. Mark Ross Clark Host: Beatrice Ruobin Huang Dr. Mark Ross Clark is someone I deeply admire as a director, educator, writer and scholar. Long before we ever met, his book Singing, Acting, and Movement in Opera inspired me a lot — and to this day, I carry one of its lines with me: “Relaxation means functioning without tension and with energy.” To me, that's not just a philosophy of singing, but a way of life. This summer, I've been so lucky to work alongside Dr. Clark as his assistant director at Chicago Summer Opera and to have the chance to invite him for this interview. In this wide-ranging and heartfelt conversation, we talk about his journey from singer to stage director, how he mentors young singers, and how collaboration, curiosity, and perseverance have shaped his life on and off the stage. He shares rehearsal memories, reflections on teaching and writing, and the kind of wisdom that stays with you long after the conversation ends. 00:00 Highlights 01:22 Introduction 02:52 Becoming a Stage Director: Observing, Asking, Learning 07:02 Memorable Collaborations with Veteran Singers 10:15 Directing Style and Approach 15:11 A Principle Often Share with Young Singers 19:35 Wesley Balk’s Influence: The Philosophy of Synergy 22:44 Writing and Publishing 33:50 Building a Network: Voices Featured in His Books 40:33 Expierence Mentored World-class Singers 51:40 Qualities That Make a Singer Succeed 52:56 What Makes a Young Director Grow and Last 58:50 International Perspectives on Opera 1:01:20 A Life in Many Roles 1:03:50 Advice to Young Artists 1:10:05 ED: Verdi: Macbeth: Overture (Prelude) · Berliner Philharmoniker · Herbert von Karajan A huge thank-you to Dr. Clark for sharing his time, stories, and insights with us.

Loren Meeker General & Artistic Director, OPERA San Antonio Host: Beatrice Huang I've always wondered how can we make traditional opera productions truly special? I think I found answer in E. Loren Meeker's Madama Butterfly. The attention to acting, the cultural detail woven into every moment. I was amazed by how layered each character felt. Even Pinkerton and Goro had moments of charm. The tragedy felt human, with moments of humor, just like life itself—vivid, complex, and real. I was glad to sit behind Loren's tech table, watching two orchestra dress rehearsals, and to have this thoughtful conversation with her. We talked about many aspects, from character development and working with cultural consultants to scenic design and the casting process. Loren also shared the strategies she uses as General & Artistic Director of OPERA San Antonio to grow opera's reach and build warm, collaborative teams. 00:00 Highlights On Madama Butterfly 01:22 Introduction 02:17 Building Characters: Depth and Cultural Sensitivity 07:47 Working with Cultural Consultants: Momo & Kevin Suzuki 12:38 A Groundbreaking Partnership: Austin Opera × Opera San Antonio 17:43 Exploring Raked Scenic Design 24:10 Casting Madama Butterfly: Artistic Choices and Cultural Responsibility On Directing and Leadership Approach 30:13 Research Process Behind Production 34:14 Managing Detailed Work in Limited Rehearsals 37:06 Helping Singers Improve Stage Presence 39:31 What Makes Opera Unique 42:31 Growing Opera's Audience: Strategies as General & Artistic Director 45:41 Female Role Model Francesca Zambello's Influence 48:33 Building a Warm and Supportive Team 51:18 ED: Puccini: Madama Butterfly, Act I: Vogliatemi bene – Vieni, vieni! I want to talk about everything related to music and musicians. I also hope to create a space where everyone can connect and exchange ideas. Most of all, I hope this podcast can be a companion to you." Host: Beatrice In this first episode, I share a discussion I led in my Women and Opera class about Madama Butterfly. With everyone's permission, I recorded our conversation and am excited to share it with you. Thank y'all for your support! 00:00 Highlights 05:18 The basic storyline of Madama Butterfly 06:18 Differences between the original short story and the opera 07:40 Criticism and controversies surrounding the opera 17:18 How different productions have reinterpreted the opera 49:04 Puccini's revisions and the multiple versions of Madama Butterfly This opera is one of my favorites, but it's also a challenging work for directors due to its cultural and ethical complexities. Our class included students from different cultures, backgrounds, and fields of study, each bringing a unique perspective. It was a meaningful conversation, and I'm happy we recorded it. Slides: How an Asian American Opera Singer Found Her Voice Amid a Reckoning with Race Does translation affect the musicality of the original opera? "Un bel di" sung in Japanese by Janet Szepei Todd Madame Butterfly 2023 Bregenz Festival New Orleans Opera Association - Madame Butterfly 2022 Program One topic we didn't have time to discuss comes from David Levin's article, "Producing Puccini Today". Levin suggests that when Puccini's operas were first created, they aimed to portray “real people” and “real life.” Over time, this sense of realism transformed into a nostalgic and comforting experience. He compares Puccini’s operas, like La Bohème, to The Nutcracker or A Christmas Carol—familiar, sentimental, and immersive rather than thought-provoking. In recent years, some directors have sought to challenge this nostalgic perception, reinterpreting Puccini's opera in modern ways. This made me think: What do you expect from opera? Should it be a time capsule of emotions, or should it provoke thought? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
