How to live an extra life?Learning a new language, or even a dialect, makes me feel like I’ve lived an extra life.
How to survive in The Pianist? 我有口音咋整?I finally watched The Pianist. While my heart aches, I can't help but imagine myself in that situation. If I lived in that era, how would I hide? How would I survive? How would I deal with my sense of identity? In my mind, I've simulated almost 800 escape plans for the protagonist, but I realize that even if I could hide, some syllables would still “show" me. Language is what I've spoken since birth, and every accent, every dialect word is a part of my past, a part of my identity. I could hide, but why should I have to hide?
法国人摆的要死!?French integrity on languages and beauty. What is a language? It’s not just a tool for communication; it’s a vessel carrying the weight of civilization and cultural heritage. Language in itself is an empty shell, gaining substance and meaning only when filled with human thoughts and emotions. But it’s in those quiet, introspective moments that the profound beauty of learning French begins to reveal itself. Perhaps you’re sitting alone, reading a timeless piece of French literature, and suddenly, in the turning of a page, you’re transported. Or maybe, in the stillness of a sleepless night, you ponder the etymology of a French word, unraveling its historical and cultural threads. Or perhaps, while wandering through a Parisian museum, you stand before a sculpture, and for a fleeting moment, you feel as if you’ve slipped through the seams of time, stepping into the golden age of French art and revolution. And in those brief moments of quiet reflection, when you feel the weight of history and the beauty of language, you realize that learning French has taken you far beyond mere words. It has made you a custodian of a rich cultural legacy, connecting you to the minds and souls of the past, and inspiring you to contribute to the preservation and appreciation of this vibrant linguistic heritage
Being a tennager in your research stage? When I was watching "Rebooting" I wondered why the heroine experiences five rebirths. It also made me think about why we say "three years old sees the adult" or "standing firm at thirty," and why people are said to be harder to change as they grow older. Maybe a mathematical formula (Harmonic Series) has quietly given us the answer! * At 1 year old, every person and event you encounter has a 1/1 impact on you. * Rebirth at 1 year old. * When n=4: (1+1/2+1/3+1/4) = 2.08333; rebirth at 4 years old. * When n=10: (1+1+1/2+1/3+....1/10) =2.92897; rebirth at 10 years old. * When n=30: equals 3.99499; rebirth at 30 years old. * When n=82: equals 4.99002; rebirth at 82 years old. I believe this principle can also be applied to research; we need to find a balance in our input-output ratio! Recently at Nanjing University, I heard many friends share fascinating research that I find truly respectable and admirable. I believe a better direction is not to abandon what you originally chose, not to start a new game that you're already good at (whether it was a forced choice or a voluntary one), but to try adding a bit of new ideas, buying new gear in the language game! Explore new interdisciplinary directions! That way, you can easily rejuvenate your already excellent work! Believe me, when you talk about what interests you, your eyes really shine! The abstract and nihilistic feelings you have about your ontological research now are entirely reasonable. However, I must reiterate that this is not about encouraging opportunistic research. Everything is meaningful only when you genuinely want to do it. If you truly enjoy delving into ancient texts and analyzing literature, I deeply admire you, and the satisfaction you gain from within is enough for multiple rebirths! I just hope more people can see your results. Best wishes! Remember!! Despite the terms getting smaller and smaller, the series does not converge to a finite limit. Instead, the sum of the terms grows without bound as more terms are added :)
How to be a good researcher?! Question: How to be a good researcher?! Answer: Being a good person, then conduct a research. If you can’t be a pine on the top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valley but be The best little scrub by the side of the rill; Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. If you can’t be a bush be a bit of the grass, And some highway happier make; If you can’t be a Muskie then just be a bass But the liveliest bass in the lake! We can’t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew, There’s something for all of us here, There’s big work to do, and there’s lesser to do, And the task you must do is the near. If you can’t be a highway then just be a trail, If you can’t be the sun be a star; It isn’t by size that you win or you fail Be the best of whatever you are!
