其实很多中国同学看到这个都会想到“下岗”，是的lay off，layoff或者lay-off确实有这个意思。其中lay off是动词短语，后两者是名词的用法。
可以理解成：
to end someone's employment, usually due to a significant change in the company
通常由于公司巨大的变动而导致某些人无法继续工作。
可以理解成“解雇、裁员、下岗”这样的意思；
