0Cheng Lü
Also known as Yingzhong, Cheng Lü (1901-1927), whose courtesy name is Xinliu, was born in Ningxiang, Hunan Province. He graduated from Changjun High School in Hunan Province in 1922, and then was enrolled at Yali University in Changsha. In 1925, Cheng Lü was admitted to the Department of Agricultural Science and Agronomy at Southeast University in Nanjing. During his school years, he joined the Kuomintang and participated in mass progressive organizations such as the Zhixing Society and the Xiequn Society. In 1926, he was elected as the executive member of the Second Division of the First District Party Department of Kuomintang in Nanjing. In February 1927, he was elected as an alternate executive member of the Party Department in the First District of Nanjing and a member of the Standing Committee of the Second District. In March, he was arrested and murdered by the regime of warlord Sun Chuanfang.
A Letter from Prison: Last Words to My Father(1927)
On the morning of March 17, 1927
Dear Father:
Words fail me when it comes to expressing my pain. Here, I implore you not to burden yourself with adopting any children to carry on our family line after my death, as they could only bring trouble to the family as I did. And that may upset you all over again. In my humble opinion, our family’s assets are supposed to be entrusted to the government after you depart this life when living to a great age. And every year, a sponsorship might be received by a male and a female student to study agriculture in college, making it possible to fulfill my lifelong aspirations. Dear Father, I am sorry to become an unfilial son who fails to undertake his due responsibilities, but I still have a final request that you take care of Mr. Zhu Kongyang, a close friend of mine. Trouble you to as far as possible satisfy his needs.
